I decided to change my desktop image and when I clicked on the drop down box thing to change it from center to tile, tile was there, but it was faded away and I can't click on it. I tried doing this with 3 other images and it wont work. The images are all .jpg, perhaps that is the problem? I am using Mountain Lion by the way =) Thanks

If you can find one image that will let you use tile (doesn't matter where its from or what it is), you can put that image and the one you really want as your BG on your desktop, then go to preferences and change desktop background, add the folder "desktop", select the image that will let you use tile, put it in the tile setting, then click on the picture you really want and it should automatically put that one in tile, even if it wouldn't let you before.
I forgot to add this, but you can also resize your image in Preview by going into Tools, then Adjust Size.
You can only tile an image if its resolution is lower than that of your screen's. Sounds like all of your images either have the exact or a greater resolution than your screen. You can try copying and pasting your image into another application to save an image of it tiling and set that as your background, or finding the image in a lower resolution.
