Although this article talks about iOS, it does explain how locations services works and what it uses:

And I did just try it on my iMac with Wifi off and then on (it is usually used wired): it did find my iMac when Wifi was on, and did not after I turned it off.

Wow. Annoying design. Thanks!! I guess iCloud won't work then since wired is used a lot. Is there something else to use?
