A question to the people who think it's software related...

I've recently deleted a load of apps because I ran out of space. I may be talking too soon, but it's behaving at the moment. Do we have low amounts of storage in common?

It doesn't explain why re-calibration does the trick though. But then again, I don't really know what re-calibration actually does behind the scenes.

I was just having the exact same problem, I have tried the clock thing that many peels have suggested but it did not work for me. Turns out my home button just needed a bit of cleaning so I dabbed a bit of water around it gently wiped it and now it works well again!

I found this by accident: I deleted my history, cookies and data from safari and it immediately worked. I know some already reset to factory settings and didn't work but maybe you can try this first if you haven't done it.

This is still an issue for me. Ipad 3 and ever since IOS 6 it's been doing this. Home button responds about 1-2 times out of 4.

Me too, the problem always comes back.

My iPad is only 7 months old and immaculate, this shouldn't be happening! I thought the high price tag was for a quality product?

Why is apple non-responsive on this issue? This needs to get solved ASAP or I'll be visiting an apple store for a replacement.

Any updates on this issue? Like everyone else, I have an iPad (gen 3) 64GB Verizon and my home button has occasionally been unresponsive since the release of iOS 6. The home button calibration method seems to work for a little while, but it often reverts to being non-responsive. I am going to make an appointment at the Genius Bar, but I first wanted to know if anyone knows if this issue is hardware related, or strictly software.

This is strictly software. Something in the configuration of my iPhone caused my home button to stop responding after the IOS 6 upgrade. Apple support had me to delete some of my configuration files and then reset to factory settings. My home button works fine now. What I did find out was the button work if you held it down for about two seconds. It seems like the OS is slow to respond before I rebuild the iPhone.

What are these configuration files that you speak of? So you suggest that I try deleting these files then restoring factory settings to remedy this issue? Thanks.

I've just discovered this thread. iPad 3 , iOS 6 and my home button is inconsistently responsive too.

I tried a full software and setting restore and the issue still persists. Made a Genius appointment, so hopefully they can fix it or swap for a new iPad. This issue is becoming quite burdensome.

As as intermediate level programmer, I am noticing a lot of bugs when certain apps render visual / window objects and graphical components. Not the only one bug, but annoying, is the HD version of Words with Friends. You can tell there is something going on when you change orientations a couple of times and the program incrementally degrades visually until it is unusable. I have noticed this in other apps. Could be anything.... OS, dev environment, or poor program quality.

Also noticing that the iPad gets very warm and burns down the battery for no good reason. Without the tools to diagnose the problem, can only assume that a process is keeping the system resources pegged. But I can assure you that I am not tasking this rig, not even close.

I just want to report that I have the same exact problem as the OP. Brand new iPad4, 64gb wifi only. The problem is present right out of the box, so this isn't due to wear and tear. I've tried all of the suggested solutions. They are only temporary. But surely the fact that there *can* be a temporary solution with these recalibration tricks, even if it only lasts 30 seconds (my average), means it's a software problem?

With gestures available, I wouldn't care about the home button at all... except for the all-important need to get icons out of jiggly-mode once you've repositioned them. Only the home button can effect that transition, and it's such a frequent need that this problem really *is* frustrating, especially for such an expensive device.

Do you guys really recommend that I make the trek to the Apple Store? Should I go through the hassle of a replacement if that's going to exhibit this problem as well? Aren't these places swamped right after Christmas? I think my two-week, 'no questions asked' period is up by next Wednesday.
