iPad 3 and iOS 6 - Home button not working

I don't think it's iOS related because I first had this problem in March/April 2012 (having bought the iPad 2 in Jan 2012). I didn't have iOS 6 back then. My feeling is that the button has a mechanical problem. Could be the frog glue they use to glue the screen to the frame. Sometimes I have to press it 4-6 times before it registers it's been pressed.

Most times, I have to use the power button to make the iPad come out of Standby. Then I use the 4-finger upward swipe to bring the active apps up. The I close those I no longer need. It's when I need delete an App from the desktop that I have a problem because the other icons are still shaking and only the Home Button can make them unshake.

In my case the hardware is fine...they have had issues with the button for the issue you noted (apple tec confirm) but in most of the cases noted in this thread the issues were seeing "drift". If I leave my large memory hogging apps up for several hours on the pad my home button starts to degrade. If I shut them down and re-cal I can go days with no issues. So something is "rotten" in the update (the many pads at work that have not done the upgrade yet have no button issues) Apple has also noted the issue which is why they are button calls to the "6.0.1 update fix list"

I also had this problem on my iPad 2 for a number of weeks after iOS 6 upgrade. Even after update 6.0.1 the problem occured. I did a compleet "reset" (backup my iPad), but the problem remained. What always work was pressing the button and quarted-rotating the iPad (read this somewhere), but this was not permanent.

However fot some weeks the problem seems to have disappearred having not a clue what I did change. Maybe it is some app I removed or installed that solved some problem.

It is definately a software problem that iOS should not allow to happen.

After approx 3 weeks of ideal work, today problem is come back. Rebooting, reseting and callibrating dont fix it. Fix only with hard pressing on button. After that button still work again. Now I'm realy mean that it is a hardware problem (may be only in my situation).

Purchased my iPad3 with iOS 5 on it. It worked beautifully!! But ever since I upgraded to iOS 6 I started having problems with the Home button not working. After reading several posts here I turned off Siri and so far my Home button works perfectly! To turn off Siri go to Settings-->General-->Siri and turn it off. This is not a hardware issue. I agree with previous posts that this problem is related to adding Siri.

I've never installed Siri and I always close all my apps, so why is my Home Button acting up? And it has been malfunctioning since iOS 5. So please TG17 don't make generalised comments like "this is not a hardware issue." We just don't know yet. Have you searched the Home Button problem on Youtube? Others on this forum have posted that the problem comes and goes. They've reset the device but the problem still comes back. So is this or is this not a hardware issue? Who has a background in engineering or knows tablet devices inside out and can tell us what's wrong? As for me, I got an appointment with a genius at the Apple store. Am going there with video evidence too (12 clicks before the Home Button activates the screen). 😠

One minute and you could have read where this was already posted and the problem reoccurs.

The majority of users in this thread are having what must be a software issue (making a software change alleviates or worsent the problem). When TG17 says this is not a hardware issue, they are likely referring to their own problems.

The frustration is calling AppleCare, who hear "problem with button" and immediately are told there is only one possible problem, hardware.

@rober294 You should re-read my reply to TG71. It's full of things such as "how qualified are you really to diagnose this as a software or hardware issue?" This is the bottom line!

However if you really want to argue beyond that, then lets consider the facts (from my side):

- iOS 5 - Home Button problem after 3 months

- Reset iPad - Home Button problem goes away and comes back

- iOS 6 - Home Button problem still here

- Hot summer - No Home Button problem

- Winter - Home Button problem

- Chilly cold London morning - Home Button problem

- Warm-ish dry afternoon - No Home Button problem

- iPad 1 user post video on Youtube about Home Button problem. I have an iPad 2!

If a mechanical problem keeps coming back despite software updates, then "..." I really don't want to state the obvious. Work it out! As for me, Apple Store genius saw my video and exchanged my iPad 2. Now my hope is that this new unit wasn't built by the same assembly workers who are causing the Home Button problem. Other than that, it's a great loveable device. I should have bought a 32GB unit. Bye!

How qualified are you to diagnose someone else's ipad? Why are you in a thread about iPad 3 home button issues talking about your iPad 2? How can AppleCare diagnose these issues as hardware over the phone?

I don't care what temperature you had your hardware problems at, we are having software problems at all temperatures.

If you can't make the connection between iPad 1, 2 and 3 having the same hardware defect, and you are stating that you know more than AppleCare, then am afraid you're worst than an idiot. My apologies. I feel sorry for people who live around you. Bye!

I see we're dealing with someone who resorts to name calling, I feel sorry for the other children in your class. Hopefully someone will teach you better someday.

Until then, I'm waiting for Apple to fix the software issues that the vast majority of this thread are having, which you may even be having as well, but you are waiting for the annointed AppleCare Genius to bestow that diagnosis.

If you fall down, and your arm hurts terribly, and it's at sort of a bendy angle in which the bones in your arm should not bend, do you want until you see the doctor to assume you've broken your arm?
