iPad 3 and iOS 6 - Home button not working

I'll enjoy unboxing a device that actually functions, since I've just sent back my second iPad that didn't function straight out of the box. Device with a single button that doesn't work vs. the potential for malware = apples and oranges.

I'd say the bigger problems like with the iPad currently.

Oh and don't plan on trying to use anti-virus programs on android, because they don't work either 😉

Okay, let's put Android aside, talk about how the home button doesn't work on iPads, since that's the point of this thread. What do you have to say about that? Androids came up just out of frustration that Apple is shipping a broken product.

But that's the point, as androids have the same problem with their home buttons (actually worse since it keeps you from using the device altogether).

ANY electronic device, especially one driven by software, can have an issue of some kind. I understand how frustrating it is but you know what? I'll bet you that Apple fixes their issue before HTC/android does. The best thing you can do is to report it to Apple (not through this forum as they don't visit this forum). The more people who report the issue - the more resources they will put on it to solve it.

I do not care about problems you claim HTC or androids have. I have never had a problem with my many Android devices. I have had 2 iPads DOA. Reporting to Applecare was met with "it's not software, if a button doesn't work that is hardware". I linked them to this forum but they said that it didn't matter.

I have the very same problem on my iPhone 4. It happened exactly when I installed IOS 6. Rebooting does not fix the issue. Problem can occur with any application. Some seem the happen more often. ITunes happens every time. It is defiantly related to the upgrade and NOT mechanical. If I hold the home button down for a few second the Voice Control will activate. Apple needs to acknowledge they have an issue with OS6.01 and fix ASAP.

Immediately after the iOS 6.01 update the Home button on my iPhone 4 stopped responding. I did a complete OS restore on my iPhone 4 and set it up as if it was a new phone. This helped the issue. I can now use the Home Button but I have to hold it for almost 2 seconds so the hardware is working and this is an issue with OS6.01. Not acceptable by any standards but at least it works until Apple can get a fixed out.

Add one more post iOS6 upgrader fooked. So good tips on here though. Rotate screen, assistive home button, freeing memory, turning of Siri, etc ...

But having an iPad just outside warranty be fooked after a software update is bad news, Apple better clean this up before some bad press makes the headlines ... But it's easy to get cocky at the top.

I have an iPad 2 and the problem started 4 months into using it (you had to press that button a little bit harder or it wouldn't register a click). Felt like the problem disappeared during the hot summer months but now it's Winter time (9 months from date of purchase) and the Home button problem is back. I checked on Youtube to see if others had this problem too and to my amazement there were!! An iPad 1 owner complaining no less! Surely Apple knows about this "unresponsive home button" issue, but no recalls or nothing. Am taking mine back as it is still under warranty.

I have same problem too. I disable Siri. It seems my home button start working.

If anyone is still having problems and hate the iPad as much as me right now, I'd recommend going to the Apple Support web page and reporting it. I just did even though I'm out of support, I requested a call back and had someone talk to me for free by going to the 'Troubleshooting / Buttons not working' menu and then selecting the 'request an exception because I recently upgraded to iOS 6.0.1' option.

They couldn't do anything to help, but at least the problem has been logged. I don't think problems get noticed/fixed from these discussions, but they would from raised support issues.

Lets get lots of support tickets logged!

if it is broken, you can enable an on screen home button under settings-general-accessibility-assistive touch

@!Braggy!, do you know that you can use some multi-touch gestures to do the things you would normally use the home button for? For example, a five finger pinch puts the forground app in the background and takes you to the springboard (home screen). A four finger upward swipe reveals the task manager at the bottom of the screen, four finger downward swipe hides it. These basically replace the home button and you might find you prefer them.

There are some others as well, but those three will get you to a happier place.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm just annoyed because I know it's a software problem. I shouldn't have to work around a problem that wasn't there before I switched to iOS 6. At the moment I re-calibrate and it's fine for a while (which also goes to show that its not an actual button problem).

Just wanted to echo !Braggy request. I just did. go to Apple support,log in, request a call back using the "buttons don't work" radial button (irony alert!) and use the "Since the 6.0.1 update exception". Even if your out of support they will call ya right back (Sunday even!). The agent told me they have a "Update Fix list" they can log the call to. I told him I was not requesting a hardware fix but to "please log the call to the 6.0.1 "fix list". He said the let every know to make the call as often these forums are not directly monitored and the call is the best way. He did say he taken other calls about this issue so it's on the radar.
