AppleTV doesn't Airplay film audio

Having just updated my AppleTV software I was pleased to see that I should be able to Airplay audio to speakers 'attached' to an AirportExpress. Sadly it doesn't work for me. While I can Airplay iTunes music to the speakers, audio from films or TV shows bought via AppleTV still comes out of the screen speakers. Advice welcome ...

It is even worse than that. Transmitting sound through the airport express to the speakers only works if you use the computer sharing function on Apple TV (Accessing in the iTunes library on the Mac through homesharing). I tried streaming music from my iPad to Apple TV using the airport express output which is connected to my speakers. This doesn't work at all. This means that the new future is completely useless. Why should I stream music first to Apple TV if I can stream music directly to the airport express? The new feature would only be useful if I could use the airport express as alternative audio output for movies.

I have this very same question, but does Apple actually responds to these queries?

Apart from stating how much this (no airplay to speakers for movies and TV shows, but yes for music videos) makes no sense, I'd actually like to know if this is something Apple is correcting soon (as in now that we've spoked they realized it was a booboo), or is there some really "smart" explanation, as in we think our customers shouldn't get what they want, but rather take what we want.

Apple, your customer is all ears...

I too feel totally ripped off having just updated. All the pre-reviews and even the 'features' listed for the update on the Apple Support site indicate this should be possible.

It is really the only real reason for a significant update. Wireless Audio for home entertainment without the need for lots of cables etc.

I personally have 2 Sonos Play5's which are also hooked up to an Airport Express and I was hoping for the ability to output movie audio from the ATV to them. What a huge let down. My original happy relationship with Apple and the fact that they care about the needs of their customers and listen to feedback is sooooo on a slippery slope these days.

It is this kind of over promising and underdelivering that can lead to company decline.

Poor show Apple! Pull your finger out!!

Add me to the list of the disgruntled. I have a projector with HDMI input, but it has no speakers at all. I've been using a PS3 to play movies and stupidly bought an Apple TV 3 as soon as they came out, incorrectly assuming I could hit my Airport Express-connected stereo speakers for sound (there really are no other good options for those of us with projectors that I can find). Excitement crushed when I realized my mistake, so it's been just sitting on top of my ceiling-mounted projector, hooked up the the alternate HDMI input, useless for anything except viewing photos. Imagine my renewed excitement when I heard about the Apple TV IOS 6 beta and the new Airplay feature. "Finally!", I thought. Uh, well, no. Turns out it only works for music. Crushed again.

I'm a multi-decade Apple fanboy. I admit it. I have loved how "everything just works" in the past, and I've spent tens of thousands on Macs, iPhones, iPads, iPods, and now an Apple TV. This is unbelievably lame. Why would anyone want to stream Airplay music from Apple TV when their computer or device can already do it? I agree with craigriches, movies are the only real reason for it.

I can only assume that this must be the real reason they fired Scott Forstall.

Shoddy work, Apple! Fix it already!

I have a work-around that lets you play movies/video/vodcast etc from your Itunes thru Apple TV using airplay spkrs for the sound.

If you go into itunes (on your pc) and select all the videos and movies etc that you want to watch, right click >get info > media kind -change it to music video.

Now on your ATV.

Go to "Computers" >music >music videos

u should see all the new created "music videos" here.

Note: - longer films often have chapters which means u cant press and hold the centre button to change the spkr output (it just goes to chapters) . So you need to set the spkr output beforehand while playing music or something.

- some movies do tend to be choppy with the sound, not sure if this is weak wireless signal or what, maybe this is why apple has not made video streaming to airplay available yet??

Hope this helps.

Hi all. I was experiencing the same thing....video streams to Apple TV but zero audio. But...I was playing those videos either through QuickTime or VLC. Dragged the movies into iTunes 11 and they appear under "Home Movies" and now play perfectly...video and audio, through Apple TV. No stuttering, no issues...all good. That may not be the solution for all of you...but it worked for me....hope it helps someone.

Wow, this is so disappointing! I tried anuvadave's hack above and it's working for me, but it means my podcasts no longer show up under the podcast menu (they get moved to music).

Apple needs to fix this - no reason for them not to enable audio streaming for movies, tv shows, and video podcasts since it's clearly technically possible.
