I would really appriciate your help. Im a college student and im thinking of buying an iPad, but will i be able to write alot of essays on it or even perhaps make powerpoints? or should i simply invest in a laptop?

Go for the laptop. YOu'll get more functionality for what you need for your buck.
The iPad was made to be a consumer device, as in consuming data and info. It can create data, but takes some fiddling and using the right app. You'll also have printing issues.. If I were you I'd get a laptop or netbook if you want something smaller and more portable and save the iPad for a graduation gift.
