I to have had tethering problems. I have AT&T and I am running into problems tethering my iPhone 4S with the new iPad after upgrading to IOS6. My phone will indicate that my IPAD is connected... But my iPad does not fully link up with my iPhone. I tried using Bluetooth but this does not work at all now. My iPad says that it cannot connect to my iPhone bluetooth connection. I used to be able to do that under IOS 5. The only way I can get my iPad tether is to reboot my iPhone and then fiddle with both devices. Then my iPad will connect as before. Unfortunately I have to go thru this procedure on a daily basis. Once my iPad connects it will not have problems for the day. I am unsure what triggers the iPhone from not fully initializing the connection and requiring a reboot.

Additional information:

- Laptop (Dell XPS-17) connected through WIFI to the iPhone 4 with personal hotspot

- Now use ipconfig to find out your default gateway and get the IP address of the iPhone

- Now ping the iPhone from the Laptop

Expected result (as was the case on iOS 5):

- 0% packet loss, ping times < 1ms

Actual result:

- 10% packet loss, ping times between 800ms and 5000ms (!!)

- The radio link itself is stable (no band change, no WIFI carrier errors, no signal attenuation).

Analysis:

- This has nothing to do with the GSM provider, as we are not even trying to go through the internet.

- We are only testing the link between the Laptop and the iPhone

- This means that there is something seriously wrong in iOS 6

Dear apple support: please act upon this quickly. If required, I can provide wireshark traces showing the

packet loss and the delays between laptop and iPhone.

the problem is not limited to non apple devices. I use iphone 4 ios 6 personal hotspot on a daily basis tethered to my 1st generation ipad running ios 5.1.1

Prior to ios 6, the personal hotspot iconnection is at best intermittent. E.g. Ipad takes forever trying to connect to hotspot...., sometimes connected but cant access internet even though i can browse on the iphone..., personal hotspot ON but ipad cant find it in the wifi list.... And etc.. All these problems will go away right after i restart my iphone. The probability to getting a connection flawlessly was at best 70% of the time without a restart.

But with ios 6..... Tat probability is at best 20% of the time. I truly believe its not gsm provider problem, or non apple device compatibility or any crap like tat. The iphone chip and/or ios is at fault.

APPLE.... Plz get your **** together. upgrade to iphone 5? Not an option!!!!

Hi -

This is what I have noticed... I have both iPhone 4 and 4s recently upgraded to iOS6. Hotspot via WiFi seem to work fine on 4s but "seems" not to be working on iPhone4. It shows 1 Connection but no internet. I have noticed the following:

If you open Network preferences you will see that Airport has YELLOW indicator as apposed to GREEN. It also displays "No IP Adderss".

If you are prepared to wait a while (1-2mniutes) the device wil eventually receive IP from your phone, the indicator light next to Airport under network connections will turn GREEN and internet will be up and running in a couple of seconds.

Not sure what causes this, but have not been able to fix it with anything short of resetting the phone. Regardsless of what device i connect to the hotspot on the iPhone 4, the result is the same.

Bluetooth seems to work fine though.

Hope this helps someone....

the best work around for me at this time is.... Turn airplane mode ON wait a couple of seconds then turn it OFF again, then turn on the personal hotspot. this will some how reset the chip or the state of ios network or something.

Work around such as resetting network doesnt work for me as i have many stored password for wifi hotspots. Restarting my phone 3 times a day is also not an option.

I find switching airplane mode on and off is the easiest, fastest n pain free way for me.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

I was as frustrated as all of you and was having exactly the same issue. I could see the iphone hotspot on my iPad and other devices but could not get any Internet connection. It was "connected" but not really connected. However, I could connect using Bluetooth with no problems. But I didn't want that, I wanted wifi so what to do...?

But the fix was super simple. I read this post from page one, and did the very easy settings...general...reset...network and within 60 seconds I was up and running. I am typing this post from my iPad connected to my iphone hotspot via wifi.

So before you trash your phone, or trash talk apple, remember, sometimes things just need to be reset to work, and even though we have all come to expect magic from apple, even they sometimes have a glitch. Considering how many times in a month I have to pull out the battery from my blackberry and then wait 5 minutes for it to reboot, I think this is a lot better. Remember, it is just a phone, and most of us remember those things used to hang on a cord connected to the wall in the kitchen.

Hi... I have reset my network settings... I can eventually tether my iPad... The problem is that the next day I have the same problem . For example today I had to reboot my iPhone , reset my network connections etc... For the longest time my iPad could not even detect my iPhone- however usually the connection will occur but the thru put is terrible... Eventually I got it working. Now in ios5 never had these problems ... The other item... Cannot tether with Bluetooth... Used to but not now... You can assume its user problems.. But it's a chore now

I am not on AT&T I'm on 3UK with iPhone 5 on iOS 6 and the phone stopped showing up in network preferences on my mac and when trying to tether via wi-fi it said 'connection time-out occured' however after resetting the network settings on my iphone the tethering via usb and wifi both work flawlessly now. Kudos to you sir for taking the time to help others by posting on here. Thanks
