iPhone 5 Display Problem: White Squares

I got these white squares on my new iPhone 5. They appear from time to time, don´t know yet when exactly:

I got a 32GB white Verizon iPhone 5 last Thursday, it had the same issue.

There was no rhyme or reason for it occuring, but when the squares appeared on screen, chances were the screen would also become unresponsive to touches.

Restarts and a clean system restore did nothing. I took it to a Verizon store and they replaced it on the spot. Rather than trying to troubleshoot it, I recommend others do the same while they are within their return period.

I had this problem a week after having my screen replaced. I read through this thread and just gave my screen a gentle but firm press down all over (in lock screen). Slowly the squares went from pure white to opaque, and now they've gone completely. Thanks for everyone's input - saved me a trip to the apple store & a whole bunch of grief!!

It started happening again, only worse with random touch actions like AppleRosas mentions - so I took it to the apple store. I didn't have an appointment so I need to go back but the guy indicated that I should back up my phone before I came back, and yes, he had seen it before. He wasn't confused at all and I think he plans on just giving me a new phone.

I had this exact same problem after changing the screen on my Iphone 5. I tried removing the screen and re-connect the cables securely, but when I turned the display on the squares were still there. I was beginning to fear that I had to buy a new screen once again, but then by complete accident actually i pressed at the top of the screen (where the camera is) pretty hard, and the screen suddenly made a loud click sound, I quickly turned it on to see if anything had happened and to my surprise the blocks were beginning to fade away! An hour later they were completely gone, hurray!

Hello, I have recently had the same problem.

-Apple 32 GB White iPhone 5

Have spoken to Apple Support and they do not know why the problem persists but may happen on rare occasion. They are more than willing to replace the iPhone as it is a hardware issue. As long as the screen shows no physical damage, your phone should be replaced for free. Refurbished or New is up to Apple on replacement.

Hope this is more than helpful to all with the problem.

Interesting. My 5s was having some minor screen issues (vertical lines that appeared suddenly), so I brought it to my local Apple Store. They checked it out and said they'd fix it for free. When I went to pick it up an hour later, they claimed they couldn't fix it after all because there was evidence of water in the phone. I did get it wet about a year ago, right after I bought it, but I dried it out right away, and it's been fine ever since. I understand, though, that my warranty is null and void as a result. I decided to live with the vertical lines rather than pay $269 for a new phone. No big deal. Then I looked at the phone, and I saw white boxes obscuring my screen, like the ones described in this thread. My phone was in worse condition than when I brought it in! I explained this, and they took the phone back to see what they could do. Then the Senior Manager came out and said they can't fix it and that my only option is to pay $269 for a new phone. I was totally shocked. She insisted the white boxes were caused by water damage, even though the boxes only showed up after they worked on the phone (and about a year after it was exposed to water). From what I read here, it sounds like just didn't put the phone back together correctly. Not sure what to do at this point. As a lifetime Apple customer, I'm extremely disappointed by such terrible customer service.

Hey,

i found a solution that worked with me, but this is only when you are out of reperation time.

First of all, i found 2 kinds of those squares,

first one is when de squares are on top of the screen, that is from bad connection.

The other one is when the squares are in the middle of the screen, if you twist the phone, they should get worse or get better, that is from a bad connetion in the soldure on the main board.

Since we can not soldure they mainboard, i ifxed it by putting it in my oven, i removed everything and placed it 10 mins in the oven (only main board).

That fixed my mainboard's connection and the screen squares were gonne and the line that didn't work works again. I made a 2 hour movie from it, but it is a big file, if you want it, you can contact me, since i uploaded it on my server.

also got pictures of it 🙂

I just had a similar issue when I was attempting to fix a screen on an iPhone 5s. The problem seems to be from a disconnect between the lcd screen and the board itself. As it turns out if you go into the hardware of the phone, and in the upper right corner, there's a metal shield. If you have the proper tools (I assume if you've opened your phone then you have the proper tools), remove the shield and check that all three of the ribbon cables are seated correctly. That was how I fixed the issue with mine, but I can't have any guarantees.

Definitely related to the display connectors. Had the same issue after opening the phone to change the battery and the artifacts at the top of the display just appeared when I powered on for the first time. I opened it up again, undid the 3 screws on the little cover at the top right of the phone and found one of the connectors was not properly snapped in. Pushed it back in and reinstalled the cover and it was fine after that. I guess I had dislodged it when I lifted the display to get at the battery. It's the display connectors for sure.
