AirPlay issues in iOS6.0

I was happy user of apple tv's airplay feature until I downloaded iOS6.0 in my iPhone 4S. Any time I want to play music in my TV or Home theater system I always had Airplay icon (the little arrow mark beside the music player's volum bar) available in my iPhone. Now ever since I downloaded iOS6.0, I don't get Airplay icon all the time, I can see apple tv is ON because I can see it in my TV, but still iphone doesn't recognise the apple TV. "Remote" application works as remote though, but that too doesn't show my iphone's music library anymore. To make Airplay work, the only work around sometimes worked is I turn off the wifi in my iPhone and switch it back, and sometime I have to turn off the Airplay feature in AppleTV and switch it back on. which I never used have to do before. I have two iPhone 4S and a Mac with mountain Lion usually on in my network. I would like to know Is any one else facing the same issue? Is this something came with iO6.0 or it could be my network issue?

Any comments from apple?

My problem is similar, as regards the orange icon color on my iPhone 4S and inconsistent Airplay mirroring with my MacBookPro on Mountain Lion. However, what's happening on my iPhone 4S is interesting. Some apps seems to have lost the Airplay icon altogether, but others have retained it. So, if I want to use an app that lost the icon, I just have to go to one that has it (like iTunes itself), activate Airplay and then go back to the app I wanted to listen on my HTS via Apple TV. Likewise, if I want to turn Airplay off on my iPhone, I have to go back to an app with the icon and change the setting. It seems my Airplay setting in any given app (well, one that still has the icon!) is a global settings for all apps that can be streamed to my Apple TV. Very annonying. The problems on my laptop are similar, although sometimes Airplay seems to crash altogether and I have ot go into my Sound Preferences and actually set it globally from there. It seems like apps, whether on my iPhone or on my laptop, engage a virtual port of some sort for Airplay and then sometimes don't want to let it go without a cache flush.

Last weekend, I tried some further experiments including:

  • Turning off all other wireless devices (cordless phone)
  • Turning off the 5GHZ band on my dual band router (forcing my iPad to use the 2.4GHZ band just like the iPhone 4S and the iPod Touch).

With both of the above (i.e. at the same time) I still had the same issue - iPhone 4S and iPod experienced same drop-outs with AirPlay, while the iPad worked okay as before (i.e. running on the 2.4 GHZ band instead of the 5GHZ band). iPhone 3GS on ios5 still works as before - no surprises.

Interesting enough, while doing the above experiments last weekend, I noticed that there was an update available on the AppleTV. So I applied the update and repeated the above tests and I reckon the problem was even worse in terms of dropouts.

Given this and that other people are experiencing the same problem, I think it is fair to say there is an issue/bug in ios6 for the iPhone 4s and iPod Touch 4th Gen. I wouldn't know if this is an issue on the new iPhone5.

I am hoping this gets fixed soon. I will hesitate to invest in more Apple gear if this continues to be a problem.

Thanks arana yes the further left page on the bottom strip of 4 icons you are talking about, I certainly see the volume bar there but Airplay Icon is missing there, which used to be always present there before iOS5.0 upgrade . so I don't think its solving the issue yet, unless its only me. Currently the workaround which I am following is open You Tube app, which ALWAYS has Airplay icon on video player, once I do Airplay some video there then I come back to Music app or screen Mirroing option then Airplay Icon is displayed there. not if its possible to post a link of another forum here so we can take look at the solution you mentioned.

For arana and JSmith552,are you guys having issue of Airplay Icon disappearing sometimes?

User uploaded file Uploading the pic of search screen with bottom panel open. My AppleTV is ON at this time, I can see the power LED in my apple tv when screen shot is taken.

HI, Neel2012. This gets curioser and curioser, doesn't it? While what Arana found seems to work consistently for me, while your is that it's an inconsistent fix--though I just saw your update, glad it worked finally! I have had the same experience as you of some apps having the Airplay icon and some not. That's been consistent since the iOS 6 upgrade. I had been doing what you were doing--going to an app that had it, engaging it, and then going to the app that didn't have it to watch that video on the Apple TV. But since I starting using Arana's fix, I just go the bottom strip once I'm in the app that doesn't have the Airplay Icon. And now I see that you have it if you wait a few minutes. I'm going to suggest that it's an app developer issue. One thing I have noticed is that I have multiple updates daily since iOS 6 was implemented. But these updates don't seem to fix all of the issues, including this. For instance, I just this morning got an update for an app that lost the Airplay Icon with the iOS update, and the new app update did not restore it. And this app is one of the most stable I have, playing high quality video over 4G and never crashing. But I have to use the bottom strip fix to throw it up on the Apple TV.

And thanks for reminding to download YouTube fromt he App Store--I kept forgetting I lost the native app with the upgrade. It's nice that I can log in with my Google Apps account, which is where I use YouTube now. My Apple TV still only accepts a gmail login, which needs to be fixed, though I suspect it won't be since the Apple/Google divorce seems final. But that's a different issue and off-topic here...

After reading several days day so many different threads - all of them whining and complaining - and I was for the first time really sad - about Apple are perhaps changing a winning horse.

The Apple eco environment with Airplay at the top - all works perfect together - now Apple is playing russian roulette... it will be unforgivable and stupid on a large scale.
We did buy special speakers in all rooms in our Institute and also at home, based on Airplay. Our Trainers using exclusive iPad combined with projectors - to show short films and play music when needed. Revolutionary in the classroom. All this whiped out overnight? The whole musicindustry is turning towards iPhone and iPad and the new 8 pin connector allready did give shockwaves through the industry and the users. But a little adaptor did solve this issue.

My problem today get solved by reading this suggetion:

"Make sure both the computer and iPad are on the same wireless network"

Of corse I'm on the same network... But my iPad was actually not. Checking this for first time since buying and installing my second iPad, I did not imaging, this could be the cause. Obvious, after updating to iOS 6, the iPad was jumping to my Guest-network and out of reach for Airplay. I was still on Internet and everything was working as usual. iPhone the same thing. After changing back to my closed network, the icons appear nicely again. And pushing 2x the Home button and go left also showes the Airplay and more stuff now. Nice.

This did save my day. And thank you Apple not letting us down. The Android Fanboys begann rubbing their hands... gloatingly... But it works perfect guys! Just a little confusion.... 😕

Cheers
