Ever since upgrading to 10.8.2, my 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2008) will regularly have a problem waking from sleep.  This initially happened once every couple of days, and now is happening multiple times a day.

The symptoms are as follows: after waking from sleep, the laptop screen remains black.  The laptop is non-responsive to any of the keys (including function keys), or the mouse.  The computer is actually running at this point (I can remote login via ssh), just not interacting or displaying anything.  I've waiting several minutes with no change.  Eventually, I either press and hold the power button, or login remotely and shut it down.

I've also noticed the last several times this has happened that the computer had already come out of sleep by itself before I opened it.

This morning, it got worse.  Not only was the computer already running, but it was running hot with the fan on high.

This problem was also reported in another thread, but since that thread is now marked "solved" I started a new one.  Here is the other thread: Problem with waking from sleep with 10.8.2.

Thanks for starting this new thread. The problem is far from solved. I don't dare leaving my MacBook Pro in sleep mode anymore due to its instable behaviour, especially waking up (without being usable though) by itself and getting hotter.

This is becoming a safety issue.

I installed the supplemtal update and restored my Energy Saver settings to the default last night but I'm not sure if I have left my Mac long enough to get to the deep sleep that causes the problem. I have let it sleep for a couple hours and so far the problem has not surfaced but will need to test the deep sleep state before getting too excited. I was pleased to return to my Mac after a coudple of hours this morning and wake it up without a problem. fingers crossed and I will report back either way.

I've been having the same issue since upgrading to ML, but this past Monday it happened again and I have been unable to get it to come back.  This is on a mid-2007 MBP, and I don't think it's a problem with the graphics.  It has only happened on ML and only after sleeping.  Usually a couple of reboots fixes the issue, but I've had no luck this whole week.

I've only noticed the issue occur when I put it to sleep when the charger isn't connected.  I don't think I've ever had the problem when closing the lid while charging.

I've a new (late 2012) iMac with 10.8.2 and the supplemental update. I too have been experiencing the 'black screen - won't wake' issue. For now I have turned off computer and display sleep and am about to go through the routine of repairing disk and repairing permissions etc. Hmm, not exactly impressed by this. Is the latest thinking to wiat for the 10.8.3 update?

I have the same issue on an iMac running 10.7.5 ... try double-swiping to the right on the wireless mouse ...

On my system it shows the widget page and you can move to your dock and access programs.  But as soon as you click on any of the programs (aside from right-clicking Quit) you are back to the black screen.  Anyhow, might be some way to fix the problem if you can get that far.  I tried several things, and ended up power cycling!

    Good luck I guess.

I was helped by a reply elsewhere. I found a simpler version of the suggested ‘fix; worked for me.

    It was as follows:

1 - Open the Finder.  Hold down the Option key, choose GO from the menu and select LIBRARY.

2 - From the Library drag the CACHE folder to the trash.

    3 - Restart.

Since doing that I have not had the problem and that was several weeks ago. The original fix suggested removing the cookies folder as well. This doesn’t seem necessary.

    Good luck!

Count me in here. I regularly get a black screen every second morning since uprgrading to 10.8.2 on my 27" iMac late 2009. Very annoying to say the least. It does not react to the Bluetooth keyboard or mouse. If I touch the power button I hear the hard drive starting to spin. Network seems to be down because I cannot log in remotely using screen sharing. Don't know about ssh because I have DHCP and don't know the IP address.

Hey guys, look time viewer, first time comment, I too have this same problem, I bought my MPB retina display late 2012, 10.8.2, for the past few months everything is fine, but lately, it went mad, everytime I close the lid, BOOM, I open it, it goes Black, or sometimes, the fan goes at high speed. Few hours ago, I updated to 10.8.3, it went mad every single time I close the lid, previously, only occasionally. Hope this help? I guess. Thanks jadewocky for opening this thread .

Well I have a solution, my mac was in deep sleep means the hard drive goes to sleep I think. So I downloaded this smart sleep mode and it did'nt happen again, probably cause it made some changes (there was a pop-up menu warning me that it will make changes). Then you can delete it if you want too. So yeah it worked for me.

    Download link: http://www.jinx.de/SmartSleep.html

This helped me but I'm open to any suggestion other than a third party app.
