I'll never learn not to count my chickens. As it turns out, the item only got as far as departure from Chicago on Saturday. Expected delivery is now Tuesday. But since I didn't even order it until almost 11 p.m. on Thursday, total transit time will be less than 3 business days IF it does arrive Tuesday, which is pretty respectable for $10 US. Most importantly, if Fedex adheres to its usual performance standard, the enclosure will arrive unharmed.

… as promised, the box in perfect condition, and "Mercury" is alive on my desktop, waiting for me to decide what to do with him 😎. (Not sure exactly how I want to revise my backup routine now that two drives are available, which means I'm undecided about partitioning, although obviously it should have a system installation. And then there's the fact that I'm dying to wipe the old external drive, but wary of placing too much faith in the new one right off the bat.)

Thank you, OWC, Fedex, and all here on the thread who helped me sort out the options. The only hard part was the preliminary hour spent fretting over static and whether I really needed to worry about it in this context. I do have an antistatic wrist strap, which I wound up clipping to a metal drawer pull in exasperation after reading all kinds of contradictory blahblah about which anti-static precautions actually work and which are strictly delusional. 😁 It's been very humid here today, and I have no carpeting, barely any electrogenic (?) synthetic fabrics, and only one sedentary old cat these days, so hopefully the drive's brain was spared.
