My trash won't empty on my macbook pro, what do I do?

First off, my trash has been 'emptying' for over two days now and the status bar has not moved at all.

Secondly, when I try to stop emptying, it will just say emptying and not do anything.

Thirdly, my mac will not restart unless I exit out of the finder (trash) but because it will not stop emptying I cannot restart unless I hold down the power button.

How do I fix this and/or get the trash to empty?

I currently have 581 files waiting to be deleted, is it because I have so many items?

I had a similar problem on a client laptop today, running Leopard. None of the listed solutions worked; I did narrow it down to some specific files in the trash (from an old OS that was on a G3, carried over using Migration Assistant).

So I went to my old standby Batchmod, a free utility downloaded from Macupdate.com. I did have to use a prior version to be compatible with Leopard; for some reason the current version kept crashing, even though it said it should be compatible. Batchmod was created to work with permissions, but there is a handy Force Empty Trash function in its menus.
