What is a carriage return?
The fix suggest placing one or two carriage returns after the message? What is a carriage return and could I put this in the mail signature?

It's the key that says "Return" (or the equivalent if you use language other than English) on your keyboard; i.e. adding blank lines. You could put them into the signature, but whether that would cure the problem you're attempting to address I don't know.
