iphone 4s ios 6 mail send problem

I upgraded my iPhone 4S to iOS 6 and have since had a major bug sending email. I compose the mail and hit send - the "woosh" sound occurs immediately (where it used to sound only actually when the mail had gone) and the app has the spinning icon with "sending" but the mail doesn't actually go.

I have done a hard reset, I have deleted and re-activated my 2 email accounts (iCloud and Gmail), and I have restored via iTunes. The issue persists. I cant send any emails from my iPhone.

Any suggestions?

Hi there. Been battling with this for a while and have done the delete mail account and even phone restore and no luck but I have found something that works. In your mail settings click on the gmail account you are having problems with. Then click on the account again at the top. At the bottom there is an smtp tab. If you then add a new server but rather than using smtp.gmail.com set up a host name of smtp.googlemail.com with your user name and password (user name is johndoe@gmail.com or your googleapps email address). Then make sure you switch off the smtp.gmail.com server and with a bit of luck it is sorted. I notice exchange is fine so it is for sure a gmail/ios6 issue

No joy for me. I did a Restore as new device (which enatils a LOT of re-setting up) but still have the issue of the Send sound happening as soon as I hit send (rather than sounding actually after the message was sent) but the status reporting as "sending" forever with the message not going out.

Doesn't seem to happen when sending from my iCloud account so could certainly be an iOS6/Gmail issue.

Thanks so much for your suggestion, it really came down to changing the SMTP server to smtp.googlemail.com. The problem was driving me crazy, I was just about to reset my phone and start from scratch, but read your golden tip just in time. 🙂

The weird thing is though, that the same Gmail account with the old smpt.gmail.com setting works fine on my iPad 3, also on iOS 6.1.3. The only difference being that on my iPad the OS language is English, while my iPhone is set to Dutch.

I knew it couldn't be a Wi-Fi or 3G problem, as everything else I sent (via WhatsApp or Twitter) worked without a hitch, including sending pics and movies.
