I just got my iPhone 5 in the mail today. Same problem. No Phone Functions - incoming or outgoing.

Email - OK. Internet - OK.

On the phone w tech support at ATT...Tier 1 then Tier 2...49 minutes. Chip at ATT said they just found a problem that A LOT of iPhone 5 users are experiencing...starting today (Sept 28).

Now What....can't go back to the old phone because 'Chip' thinks it might cause me to loose my unlimited data plan.

I am having the same issue on my wife's iPhone 5 (white) too. I received my iPhone 5 (black) yesterday and it set up fine. Today my wife's arrived and I am having issues with her Yahoo account verification as well as making and receiving incoming calls. I can text fine with her cell but not much further than that. The only thing I did different in setting up our iphones was I did mine straight from phone and wifi while I connected my wife's to iTunes for setup.

I tried the troubleshooting techniques of resetting network and removing then reinstalling the sim card but neither solved the problem. I am mot sure why I cannot make or receive calls through our ATT service even though my new iPhone 5 works fine.

Also, she cannot pull up or listen to her voicemails. Nothing shows except "Cannot Connect to Voicemail"

HEY!!! I JUST SOLVED THE ISSUE FOR BOTH LACK OR SENDING AND RECEIVING CALLS AS WELL AS THE YAHOO VERIFICATION ISSUE. I WENT IN MY WIFE'S PHONE AND RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULT SETTINGS DELETING EVERYTHING TO THE WAY IT WAS FIVE HOURS AGO WHEN I PULLED IT OUT OF THE BOX. THEN I WENT THROUGH THE START UP PROCESS AGAIN BUT THIS TIME I SET IT UP LIKE I DID WITH MY IPHONE 5 YESTERDAY BY WIFI SETUP ONLY AND NOT CONNECTING TO ITUNES. EVERYTHING WORKS FINE NOW.

Same problem here in Montclair NJ.

White 16 gb - I restored it twice, it won't make calls or receive. It appears I have a signal but it won't make calls.

As soon as I activated it, it shut down the old phone so now we have have nothing.

ATT said it "takes time" and there are millions of phone booting up, so I'll need to wait, but that was 12 hours ago.

CSCH977206- what did you do differently? Setting it up wifi only??? How is that possible? Details please.

Anyone find a resolution? Did waiting really work?

I am glad to know I am not the only one with this problem. I upgraded from the 4s to the 5 with no problems. However, according to AT&T, the problem exists with upgrading from 3GS to 5. I tried restoring to factory default but that didn't work. I tried restoring with a backup but that didn't work. I tried setting it up as a we phone both through iTunes and over wifi but that didn't work either. Called AT&T but that when she explained about the known issue. Said it can take up to several days for the problem to be resolved.

I don't think it's an "activation" thing we can wait for... If it was, mine would be up now. So would all of yours. I also think CSCH is a different issue.

My old phone is dead, useless.

Headed to Genius Bar / ATT store this morning for a complete replacement. I suggest you all do that too, AT&T on the phone is going to keep saying - "hold please" and "wait for activation". Which is horse crap. Going to do it before they run out of replacements too.

F that.

Did you all receive your phone yesterday? Where are you located? I'm in northern jersey

OK Everyone. My problem was fixed. The solution was two part.

Part 1 - Listen to your wife - I called Apple

Part 2 - This is whar we did with Apple. A 3 step process:

  1. Go to Settings>Phone>My Number. Make sure there is a 1 before your 10 digit phone number.
  2. Then go to Settings>Wi-Fi. Turn OFF your Wi-Fi
  3. Hard RESET (I never knew this one). Hold down power button on top of phone AND Home button simultaneously (at the same time for those of you in Rio Linda) until you see the Apple logo appear.
  4. Make a phone call
  5. Send a text
  6. Voila!!

That worked for me. I hope it works for the rest of you. If my directions are not clear ...call Apple.

I had the same problem yesterday when I got the iphone 5. I was told by a 2nd apple support rep to remove my sim card. Once I pushed a paperclip in to the hole next to the tray of the sim card, the phone activated. The apple rep didn't know why all of a sudden after 2 hours of nothing my phone was now active. Could be a coiincidence or maybe the sim card need to be jarred a bit? Phone has worked perfectly ever since.
