I had this same issue (phone activated and displayed AT&T connection but I could not place/receive calls). I tried removing the SIM, rebooting, etc. to no avail.

Resolution was: Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content and Settings which will result in a reboot of the device. Follow the on-screen instructions while DISCONNECTED from iTunes (connected via WiFi). Select the option to Setup as New iPhone (you can restore later in iTunes). At the end of this process I was up and running.

Went to apple store, replaced it.

Had same prob with my 5 that arrived yesterday. Also white, 32gb. Took advice last night from csch977206, SETTINGS-GENERAL-RESET-"Erase all contents and settings". Then went through set-up again on the 5 and when I got to the point of back up, I had to choose itunes bc I had a 3 before and it was never wirelessly backed up (not icloud compatible). I plugged in to Itunes and restored the latest back-up from my 3. It worked!

I think something happened with the original set-up that caused a glitch in my service. Might have been that I started setting up my 5 without powering off my 3. Good luck!

PS This was a last ditch effort after "restoring to factory settings" through itunes 3 times. That doesn't work and it takes forever.

Followed the steps of erasing everything and starting over. It worked but now the voicemail is not. Called AT&T again. Known issue with visual voicemail. Said it is happening to androids also. Gave until Monday to be fixed.

Oh yeah....Voicemail STILL not working.

I don't want to make this into a career....I already have one.

A replacement nano SIM card from the local ATT store got me up and running. ATT level 2 support told me Apple provided the SIM cards in shipped phones and there are quality issues with many.

Even with the hiccups I love this phone. Best of luck to all.

I also got my phone yesterday (Sept 28th) - at first I had nothing functioning. Then iMessage, internet, and apps started working... Then I had no non-iMessage texts or calls for nearly a day.

I just tried the Erase all Content and Settings trick and rebooted from WiFi. So far so good, I have made a call and sent a text to a non iPhone user without any problems!

Just got off the phone for the third time today with AT&T for trying to se te Internet through the cellular data. No luck. Deduced it was the SIM card from china. Going to AT&T tomorrow for new SIM card.

OK Everyone. My problem was fixed. The solution was two part.

Part 1 - Listen to your wife - I called Apple

Part 2 - This is whar we did with Apple. A 3 step process:

Go to Settings>Phone>My Number. Make sure there is a 1 before your 10 digit phone number.

Then go to Settings>Wi-Fi. Turn OFF your Wi-Fi

Hard RESET (I never knew this one). Hold down power button on top of phone AND Home button simultaneously (at the same time for those of you in Rio Linda) until you see the Apple logo appear.

Make a phone call

Send a text

Voila!!

That worked for me. I hope it works for the rest of you. If my directions are not clear ...call Apple.
