iPhone 5 Verizon LTE problem

I have the 64GB iPhone 5 in white on the Verizon network. Each day at a random time LTE will have a problem where I can't make a facetime call. If I try and run a speed test either my up or down will not complete the test. The only way for me to fix the issue is to toggle airplane mode and as soon as my phone picks up the Verizon LTE signal I can make a facetime call.

I have done some troubleshooting on my own and here are some of those steps and results.

I contacted Verizon and they "rebuilt" my line in their system. I'm not sure what that means, but Verizon assured me it would fix any issues in their systems.

I have the issue on LTE only, 3G and Wifi have no issues with facetime and complete speeds tests every time without issue.

LTE in my area is a full 5 bars and when I'm not experiencing this issue I typically get 10-20Mb down/up

I contacted AppleCare and they suggested I do a reset.

I tried a reset on "Network Settings"

Nothing above has made any progress so tonight I'm trying a full reset on the phone per AppleCare instructions. If that doesn't work I was told to take the phone into an Apple store. The only issue with that is the 1 hour drive one way which I'm trying to prevent.

If anyone else is having the same issue please speak up or point me to a fix you have done.

Thank you,

Tom

Sounds like you have a bum VZW store but a really good Apple store. The Apple store near me was terrible when I went there.

My VZW store had no problem swapping my nano SIM when I told them the problems I was having. Given you already swapped the phone, i would highly suggest a nano SIM next to rule that out. I had really weird behavior until i swapped my SIM, now my primary problem is just low signal strength and poor performance across VZW's network.

Now that the phone has been swapped out it certainly lessens the chance of a hardware issue but I'm not ruling it out. If a sim swap doesn't fix the problem then Ill be running out of ways I can troubleshoot this issue and I'm fearing ill be stuck between two companies that claim the other is at fault. I'll report back once the sim swap is done.

Pete, how's the other thread coming along? If I can't fix my specific issue here ill condense my posts and merge into the larger thread if that would be more useful.

Hey guys, I have this problem too, and not surprisingly, I also live in WNY. I live in Buffalo and work in Rochester, and I find that when I'm driving back and forth, LTE tends to hang when I switch from 3G to LTE and back again. Like most of you, I just turn airplane mode on and off and then it's good... until I switch networks again. I also sometimes experience the same thing when switching from WiFi to LTE. I'm on Verizon, so I'm guessing it's a problem with them.

Let me know if anything changes or updates!

I travel all over the country and I live in Syracuse. I was in Orlando, Tampa, Sarasota FL at the beginning of the week and my Iphone 5 and had no LTE issues at all. Boston on Thursday and no problems there. Here in Syracuse same LTE problems you all have been experiencing. I would say its a network problem not the phone. If I do a hard reset it fixes the problem short term. Hope this helps.

I'm having this problem to. I'm in Philadelphia. It seems that when you use the phone for over a minute and come back to LTE something weird happens. I can surf the web on some sites using LTE but if i go to the itunes app or the app store or try to facetime and send imessages, they wont send, Facetime wont work or the app stores won't connect.Putting the phone on airplane mode and then off everything works on LTE again. I replaced the phone but it also does the same thing. It only happens if you make a voice call. It seems like that's the only time.

Believe it or not, I think I might have figured something out. in Settings > General > Cellular > Roaming, there's a setting for International CDMA. Though the instruction below says to turn off when roaming internationally, I wonder if there's some setting that has an effect on the way that towers hand off the LTE to 3G signal and back again. I turned the setting to OFF, and my LTE to 3G switch seems to be much, much better. Might be worth a try to see if it works for all of you.

I tried turning off international CDMA like modern mentioned above and 12hrs in everything appears to be working fine. Lets hope you just found a quick fix! Also thanks to everyone else for contributing their info so we can confirm that at least in NY this a an issue. I'll be continuing to test the method above for a day or two before reporting back.

Unfortunately toggling international cmda doesn't change this issue. I'm back to where I started with LTE showing 4-5bars but being unable to upload which prevents sending dating from any app on the phone.

Just got off the phone with Verizon Tech support. They agreed that the sim card should be replaced as a troubleshooting step considering the work I have already done. I should get the sim card NLT 17OCT. I'll do the sim card swap and post any progress.

Hello again, Cooleyrobb above might be onto something. I have tested his theory, that it occurs after a voice call, since I read his post and it appears accurate. If you reset your data connection, it seems to work until you connect via a voice call. After the voice call, the data connection looses the upload speed. I reported this to Verizon, who told me that my trouble ticket has been escalated and remains open (12 days now).

Count me in as another to have this issue. I'm in PA, but northeast of Philly. I notice a lot of replies are showing locations in the northeast, so I'm beginning to wonder if this is an Apple issue or a Verizon issue. This issue only just started effecting my phone last Wednesday, my first two weeks with the phone prior were without issue. The issue for me happens when I either end a call and connect to LTE or when I leave a WiFi network for LTE. The only thing that helps is either doing a hard reset or resetting network settings. Apple is sending me a replacement device, but I am not hopeful that it is hardware. I hope this gets fixed soon, as if I forget about this my battery drains really fast due to the weather widget trying to update and not having a connection.

There is a 25 page thread which primarily focusing on VZW iPhone 5 issues at:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4329076?start=360&tstart=0

Would be great if you guys could add your thoughts there.

Allenpf, if your ticket with VZW under a ticket #? If so, this is a "tower" ticket to the specific tower location where you asked them to open the ticket.

I just tried the reset network settings in my low signal location and it did nothing, but this was not a strong signal location.
