Garage Band won't work with Yamaha P250 Keyboard???? -- Help!!

I have a Yamaha P250 stage piano keyboard that I would like to be able to play and record into tracks on Garage Band with my MacBook Pro. The Tools software that came with the Yamaha P250 doesn't support the OS X 10.4.6 of the MacBook Pro. I downloaded free software from Yamaha: Generic USB driver- v1.0.1 (.SIT, 124 Kb, MAC OS X). But when I hook up the USB connection and try to record, --- nothing. My Mac does not register any input on "line-in" in the Apple system preferences.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Could it be there is something very simple I need to adjust? Do I need a different driver? Is it possible that Garage Band just can't work with the Yamaha P250?

I am trying to record software instrument via USB, but have been unsuccessful. There are a few things that I need to try, but haven't got around to it. The S08 keyboard is actually my fiancées, and I haven't had a chance to play with it in a while.

I haven't tried to record the S08 voices via audio cables, but I think that shouldn't be a problem because I've been successful recording voices using the built-in microphone on my computer.

The problem is that when I try to record a software instrument, the only input I can get GarageBand to recognize is from the computer via musical typing or a musical keyboard in a window, it won't yet recognize input from the S08.

I had the same problem. In the MIDI Audio setup area I was fine and GarageBand recognized my MIDI input, but I wasn't getting any sound. What fixed the problem was a little switch on my device that goes between the USB on my computer and the MIDI in/out on my keyboard. I had to make it so the MIDI stream was going in instead of out (or vice versa, but I think it was the first way). If you can somehow control your stream to make sure the midi is going the right way...maybe that would help. I don't know if any of this makes sense to anyone but me. I hope it helps. I scratched my head on that one for quite some time. Hope you get yours to work. It is a great relief when it does!

Thanks skygirl.
Your link (and Woods2006) has got me out of a spot with my MacBook Pro.
I couldn't find a driver to get my Yamaha UX96 USB/MIDI interface recognised by the ICD. Now I DL'd it from that link and installed it.
It works fine with OSX 10.4.7 too, so the keyboard can talk MIDI to garage band and other sequencers.

:-))

Sensei,
Does the keyboard have a socket for USB cable connection?
If it doesn't, it might have 5pin Din sockets for MIDI In, out, and Thru.

If this is the case, you will need a USB/MIDI interface, to which you connect the keyboard via MIDI cables, and then a USB cable from the interface to the Mac.

Then you should open Audio MIDI setup MIDI Device Tab and scan for devices. Your Keyboard (if connected straight through, via USB) OR the Interface if you've gone that route, should appear as a device.

Unless you know what you're doing, don't mess with the preference pane settings. They'll work by default

I finally figured out how to get my MacBook Pro to work with the Yamaha S08 music synthesizer. The software was all configured once I installed the drivers I found linked from this thread. The trick was to launch GarageBand and have the USB cable connected with the S08 turned OFF. Then, when the S08 is turned on, GarageBand brings up a dialog saying that the number of MIDI channels has been updated. GarageBand then communicates perfectly with the S08.

The instructions for this were actually in the manual that came with the S08... I guess I just glazed over this, thinking that USB was beyond this sort of thing... Whatever happened to hot-swapping? Oh, well, it's an easy fix... at least I don't have to reboot my Mac.

I have been having a similar problem with MY machine, and I think (I am not at home now) I have the latest driver.

I wonder what, if anything I am doing wrong?

Thanks (Paul, in tokyo)

I have a similar problem...unrecognized or recognized but not playing in GB or other programs. Maybe there is something we can learn from one another's problems---->
