I just got my iPhone 5. It's asking me to give my SIM card number in order to activate it online. The instructions are saying to take the back cover off of the phone. How do I do that? Doesn't look like I can. I tried using a pin to open the side of it but that didn't work.

No, this doesn't work. The display only shows the first 17 digits of the 20 digit number. There is no way to see the last three digits and no way to copy it. The screen will not go to landscape position, either. Basically, it does display the digits, but the screen on a 5s is not big enough to display this absurdly long number. There is no way to reveal it. Another bone-headed bad, bad design by Apple, a company that was once famous for great design is now known for its horrible design.

If the SIM is already installed in your phone, you can browse to the Settings area and obtain there.
Settings > General > About
Locate the ICCID number. It is typically 20 digits long (5 groups of 4 digits). This is the SIM card number.
If the Phone was shipped with the SIM installed, this ICCID number is usually written on the label that is affixed to the outsided of the box.

This worked! Saved me a trip home, and trying to scrounge up a pin...
You need to pop the SIM tray by inserting a pin or small paper clip into the hole on the side and pressing. The SIM tray will pop out. You have to get the angle just right, though.
The SIM card number is also on the back of the box.
