Apple battery charger flashes orange

Not sure where to post this but as I use the batteries for my Trackpad and Mouse I will ask here,

I have an Apple Battery Charger and Apple supplied batteries, I charged them up only about 2 times in total and now when I put the batteries in the charger it flashes orange no matter what, surely the batteries can't be faulty they are advertised to last up to 10 years of been recharged over and over? Can't get any to charge just constant orange flash :\

Just follow these steps if the led on a Apple battery charger blinks orange:

  1. Clean the contacts on the charger with a dry cloth, try charging. If the led still blinks try 2.
  2. Clean the contacts of the batteries, try charging. If the led still blinks, try 3
  3. Try charging new batteries. If the led still blinks, return the charger for replacement and take the batteries you tries charging with you for testing.

Cleaning the contacts does the trick 9 out of 10 times!

I had the same problem with a brand new Apple charger. I got them working by plugging the charger in and out several times. Each time, I waited a few seconds until it was blinking, and then unplugged it, and then plugged it back in, waited until it started blinking, repeat ... The package I bought looked like it had been on the shelf a long time -- presumably the batteries had self discharged. I think it just took a few jolts to get enough juice into them to the point that the smart charger believed they were charging normally.

Rub the contacts (of the battery and the charger) with a piece of cloth (which you use to clean your spectacles or computer screen) will do. No harm to use a bit of alcohol to wet the cloth beforehand, but do not re-try charging until all things are completely dried. This charger is extremely stringent -- generates faulty message whenever the contacts are not perfect.

Stenito's answer is the one that works. The battery wiggling is really just achieving the same thing.

For whatever reason, this is a very common problem with Apple chargers - no idea why. (I have two chargers and they both have the same problem and have had since shortly after I bought them.

I suggest using just a little optical cleaning spray on a cloth and use that to wipe the contacts clear then let it dry well before replugging.

This fixed the problem in my case as well...

I found out that it was a charger problem (rather than a battery one) simply by moving a battery between slots. On one slot, the charger LED lighted up green (as the battery was full), and on the other one, it started flashing orange the moment I moved it.

Then I tested it with several other batteries as well (just to be sure) and saw the same behaviour. Then I took a close look at the contacts and also saw some marks/gunk on the problematic slot; so I just gave it a nice rub with some tissue paper until it was shining again.

That's it, it worked.
