Had a full charge last night and the fix was only temporary when I originally replied to this post. I have used the phone the same today and no improvement in the battery life. Apple...hurry up with an update because I think it is ridiculous that we have to turn off iOS6 features to save battery life. This is why I should have followed by instincts and waited awhile for the iPhone 5....they always have problems with the initial rollout.

Very helpful all, thank you. And...

Has anyone had experience with Evernote being a (the?) culprit?

I took my iPhone to the Genius Bar, and their diagnostic said Evernote had glitched. We removed Evernote, did a cold restart, and he I could put Evernote back on and it should be fine. I did that. Battery life improved but still bad (eg: from 100% to 70% in 3 hours, instead of down to 60% in less time, but with only use 1 text and looking at a few emails, replying to 3... yikes!). Now I've removed Evernote again, and it's way better.

After reading this thread, I've also turned off photo stream and documents in iCloud. Any further limitation in unworkable for me since I use it way more for data than actual phone. Service isn't good enough where I live to make anything other than a very quick call.

Any thoughts about EVERNOTE vs ICLOUD as the CULPRIT?

Thanks!

Paige

So I took my phone back to apple. They didn't have any in stock to exchange. Said they would order one and call me when it was ready. The guy tells me there's nothing wrong with my phone and tells me "tips" for longer battery life. I know all the tricks already. I've have every iPhone since the 8 gig 2g. I've never experienced this before. I definitely want a new phone I would t have driven 45 min one way I the phone was working. If it still Drains going back to the 4 S.

Exactly what I was thinking! I feel duped. The battery life is something Apple should be ashamed of. I mean that sincerely. Sure Maps ***** but, I want this battery issue front and center. Maybe we should be worried that more isn't being done. Funny thing Apple, I realized that I'm still within in my buyer remorse period.

I'm wondering if I should check out your competitors? You know, nudge nudge, wink wink? I'll give a hint. South Korera. I'm hoping that they can deliver the quality that was, once ,exemplified by your company. Its a sad day.

I stood by you as loyal customer since my Apple 2c. That was my first computer and I never looked back. I loved my Iphone 4. Wish I still had it. Then this dud.

Thanks,

So I returned my iphone 5 and got another one. No problems changing it out. I charged it all last night. Used it today still about the same as it was. I will continue to update how battery life is the next couple of days. I still like the phone and would not switch to an android phone at this point . I just want the battery to work better. I need to just turn the percentage off. Watching it drop while I'm typing this is infuriating. Especially knowing how well the iPhone 4 battery held a charge.

I found after many days of adjusting all of my settings to minimum and also resetting the iPhone 5 to factory setting and reloading all of the apps. etc. that the best solution is to just to turn the battery life % indicator off. Now, I don't stare at the battery life going down 1% every 3 mins. of usage. Ignorance is bliss. Btw, I'm being a little sarcastic but it is the solution that's working for me.

Yeah, that was my solution too. It made me crazy and I was developing obssessive compulsive behavior. Now with the battery % indicator off, I don't stare at the battery status. I just know that I only need to worry if I'm out and the battery icon turns red. Overall, the battery life is fine for a day of use and recharging once every night or other night. Just accept the fact that it will never meet the promoted specs. of 8-10 hrs. of talk and browsing. I always getting roughly 6.5 hrs. of usage per full charge. I'm done worrying about it.

I read that in order to stop the heavy draw on the battery on iPhone 5 you have to:

  • Turn down screen brightness
  • Turn off bluetooth
  • Turn off wifi if not currently connecting
  • Turn off iCloud Backup
  • Turn off Notifications
  • Turn of Location Services
  • Switch Mail to Manual Retrieval
  • Eliminate every app running in the background.
  • BASICALLY TURN OFF EVERYTHING THAT YOU ARE NOT CURRENTLY USING!

Any update on new phone battery?

Do we know if the problem is all iPhone 5 batteries, or just some (ours)? If just some, I'll complain vehemently at Genius Bar to get it replaced. Apple Care should be good for fixing malfunction, no?

And yes, great idea to turn the % indicator off. That helps. So goes buying a power cable for the car. I know we should not have to do these workarounds, but I'm looking for ways to adapt and reduce my crankiness. There's a lot about this phone that I love, and I want to focus on that.

Well I believe that it's just the way it is. No difference in battery life with the swap. In fact this phone is worse because the power button is loose makes a noise if you shake it. I recently took an 800 mile trip and the maps and turn by turn were great. Of course my phone didn't last the whole day but I did get 9.5 hours of nav out of it. I need to get a car charger I guess.

Just texting and opening a couple pages losing as much as 15 percent within 20 minutes not happy don't know what to do
