Unknown Data Usage on IOS 6

Ever since I've updated to ios 6 my cellular data is being over killed! I have a 2GB data plan on verizon. It usually lasts me a month but today is the 29th of September and I've used it all. What is this crap on ios 6. Other have reports on unknown data usage on ios6. I hate having to turn my data off every night.

DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY INFO ON THIS!!!!!!! It's killing me how much is being used. And my phone is asleep and all apps are closed. WHAT THE **** APPLE!

I had this issue and spoke to my carrier (Optus in Australia) and I thought I'd share my experience.

It is not to do with iCloud, podcasts, or any other specific application. Using data intense apps will obviously demonstrate the problem but it seems to be nothing to do with the problem itself.

It seems to be as much the carriers responsibility to fix as the iPhone.

I rang my operator and after explaining that "just turn off cellular data when I get home" was not a feasible solution I got kicked up the chain to talk to a supervisor. She was entirely aware of the problem and agreed to refund my $500 data bill.

What really piqued my interest is that she said that it would not be a problem anymore. It is (apparently) a problem that has been solved on THEIR end. There is some bug between how the iPhone and carrier interface with one another and it seems to be something the carrier can fix. I suspect the problem originates with iOS6, but it is something carrier fixable. I will be testing this before I turn cellular data back on.

So, CALL YOUR CARRIER! This seems to be very widespread though it's extremely difficult to tell how far it extends because you may only notice it when you get a bill.

Hope some of that helps...

It's iCloud. Close all apps... Delete iCloud ... Don't just turn off some options... Completely Delete iCloud account - it'll say "keep data on iphone" - click that so you can keep the contacts you have on there, etc... now go to Usage / Cellular Usage.... click Reset Statistics .... and now it says 0... go back a minute later... it should still say 0... This is what happened with me. I deleted iCloud ... kept my contacts on my phone...manually set up my @me/@icloud email address and the data usage isn't happening anymore....it's a bug.

I installed iOS 6 on Sept. 20. My usage has gone from 101.5mb at most from April billing cycle through Aug. 12 billing cycle to 307MB during current billing cycle which is not over yet! A call to Apple tech. support and a visit to Apple store today was useless. The least they should do is inform their own tech. staff who could then be more helpful with suggestions such as those in the foregoing posts. They seem to be hiding in the weeds and thus costing users more money. Assuming, as I believe, that this is an iOS problem, sounds like class action material. At the very least it tarnishes Apple's reputation.

I've sen the same problem with iOS6 on iPhone 4 and now iPhone 5.

Called Apple, they played dumb, like there is no issue. Called AT&T, another dummy. Asked to speak to supervisor. She said she has seen her data useage DOUBLE as well.

She claims Apple is advising them to tell folks to go to:

Settings/ Prviacy/ Location Services. *Scroll to bottom on page to: System Services and turn them ALL off.

I did that, left Cellular data on & will monitor usage.

*I only have the old 300MB/ $15 plan for a reason - I do not use 4G LTE that much, usually on WiFi.

CLEARLY an iOS6 issue, as they hit me w/ overage bill in Sept. as well when i upgraded iPhone 4 to iOS6.

Needed: Carrier update setting update from AT&T -and_ iOS6.0.1 update to resolve this.

Very scammy thing to do!!

hello, im on iOS 5.1.1 if i upgrade to iOS 6 am i looking at "random" data usage? and maybe a little worse battery life?

Well, you might, or you might not. I have an iPhone 4 which was on iOS 5.1.1 and upgraded it to iOS 6 and I don't have any issues with data usage. In fact, over the last 5 days, it used a total of 35MB of cellular data (and glose to 1GB of wifi). I also have an iPhone 5 (running iOS 6 of course) and it is only using slightly more data, but it is my primary usage device. The iPhone 4 was my primary device until I got hte 5, and the iPhone 4 became my work iPhone.

So my wife and I are having the same issue on iPhone 4 AT&T phones, had them for 1 year, downloaded the iOS6 update, everything seemed fine for several months. they came out with another small update recently and for the last month our data is way off for normal use. We only have the 200 MB plan, but have had this plan for 4 years, with no issues, we use WIFI at home and work, no problems. My wife's phone used 100MB in 3 days, and I used 30 MB in 3 days having the celluar data turned off, yes totally turned off. Data is leaking via certain apps or the IOS6 is somehow accessing data via Cell Data when it's not supposed too. The article that was posted about Verizon having the same issue and having Apple fix it, sums up that this is a real issue and Apple needs to fix this across all carrier platforms, it seems to be a OS issue and not a carrier issue. If this is just a scam for Apple to sell more phone because they can tell carriers they'll make there money back because their phones use more data. Let's hope Apple didn't actually do this!!!, if they did this just really ****** me off. if it was a software glitche, then they need to fix it quick, or they will lose a lot of loyal Apple fans with a faux pas like this. It seems it's iCloud that is accessing files and transferring data even when all of the iCloud apps are restricted for WIFI and Cell Data is turned off, but it's hard to pinpoint, because sometimes no data leaks, then all of the sudden I use 30 MB in one day on WIFI only. It's crazy! Apple please fix this ... !

iPhone 5 on Verizon

Last post was end of 2012....it's now August 2013 and my daughter is having this excessive data usage problem. My wife (with the same phone) does not have the problem. No one streams video only since email, texting and a few other apps that aren't data intensive. Apple re-installed the operating system....did not do a system restore for fear that it was corrupt. Problem still presipitated so Apple replaced the phone. Problem still exists. Apple is now telling us to go to Verizon. That converation with Verizon will go nowhere.

Has there been any other info or guidance on this problem since the last post?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, my recommendation is to download the iphone configuration utility http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1466

The config utility will give you access to the phone's log console.

Get a detailed bill (showing each data connection) from verizon. Look for unexpected spikes in usage on your bill. With any luck, the console log will show what app was running, and what it was doing at that time.

The fact that the genius bar does not realize how useful this bit of detective work could be is rather disheartening.

If you find the offending app, uninstall it.

I think the log console only runs while the phone is plugged into the computer, so if you find that you have spikes in data usage when you're in bed, set your computer to not go to sleep, and leave the console open and logging.
