Install Linux/POSIX compatible software on 10.4

Hello everybody,

i'd like to capture the RAW image data from a machine vision camera (XCD-SX910CR) through firewire. unfortunately there doesnt seem to be any software for OSX doing that, but i've found a Linux app called "Coriander" that supposedly does this.
(links: http://damien.douxchamps.net/ieee1394/coriander//index.php
http://sourceforge.net/projects/coriander )

now, the first link says you need a Linux Box, but the souceforge page states: "Operating System : All POSIX (Linux/BSD/UNIX-like OSes), Linux"...
so i wonder if i can install this on my Powermac G4 running OSX 10.4.

i have compiled a few simple programms before, but i'm not sure if it's possible at all (and if it wouldnt be simpler to just install linux on the box 😉

any thoughts appreciated

ps:
a few snippets from the manual page:

Linux Kernel and devices
It is strongly advised to use a recent kernel. In the 2.4 branch choose 2.4.23 or later, for the 2.6 branch try 2.6.11. There has been recent changes in the DMA kernel API so that coriander and libdc1394 will only compile with a kernel version >=2.4.23. You should enable 1394 support and select raw1394, ohci1394 (or pcilynx, depending on your card) and video1394 modules (for DMA, only works with OHCI cards). [...]
After compiling and installing the modules, you should create the proper 1394 devices. There are two devices to create: raw1394 and video1394.
Gnome dependencies
As Coriander is a Gnome 2 application, I expect you to have some Gnome libraries installed. Besides the main Gnome library, you should also install the Gnome development packages and libraries. If the development libraries are not installed the configure script will fail with some message related to gnome-config.
required libraries:
Autoconf and Automake (for CVS)
libraw1394
libdc1394
libftp (optional)
SDL
Vloopback

I dont think that a simple recompilation will work using a Software which is built for linux drivers.

However, regarding the camera,
Have you checked out: http://www.unibrain.com ?
They sell FW-cameras which probably use the same protocol then yours.
http://www.unibrain.com/Products/VisionImg/Sony.htm

And, the Camera comes with Software for Mac and PC.
The Software seems to be freely downloadable from the web.

hiya,
unfortunately the mac software at unibrain seems to be only for their webcam and not for the machine vision cameras (which state windows only at the top of the site).. but thanks for the idea, i'll ask around at a few places that carry this model and see if they have any mac software (since the sony SDK is win only i doubt it though).

so i guess i'm going to try to install Linux on my box, which unfortunately again, i have never done before.
I've heard that YellowDog is supposed to be easy for a newbie, but the software page mentions there are coriander packages available through the package management system for Debian, Slackware, Suse, RedHat... and that might spare me some compilation hassles.

anybody got experience with any of the distros above on a Powermac?
or am i better off getting a cheap PC for that?

thanks for the help

When I installed (about 4 Month ago) Ubuntu and, a few weeks before that, a Yellow Dog distribution on my G5, I had some problem with X11 and my graphics card with Yellow Dog.
However installation of both distros was easy.

Ubuntu uses the debian package manager, which I prefer over the rpm System that comes with redhat, YellowDog or SuSe. Also the debian system works like fink, which is availible for OSX.

My recommendation is Ubuntu.

As usual, you have to repartition your Harddisk before installing another OS. which means you have to backup everything.
There is a Live-CD availible however, which you can try out without changing your computers Configuration.
