Holding the buttons down for roughly 2 seconds worked!

You have to be careful not to hold for longer or you get multiple letters.

Once you have logged in then go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Enable the "Guest User"

Then when you restart you can login to the Guest User account without a password.

Then you can go 'Switch User...' in the menu next to the Time/Date in the top right.

(if this menu doesn't show then go to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options > Show Fast User Switching)

Then I guess upgrade to MacOS Sierra. (going to try this part shortly to see if it fixes the bug)

In my case, this inability to enter my password started happening more and more frequently, and I thought it had something to do with a backup drive I was using. I also thought it had something to do with using multiple languages.

In my case on my MacBook, it was using the installed keyboard, not a bluetooth keyboard.

My solution was in going into recovery mode by holding the on/off button until it went into shutdown mode, then pressing the same button again to go into Recovery mode.

From there, the help screed advised that I could have a conflict from Filevault, and prompted me to enter my password to decrypt Filevault.

That was the solution. Is working fine for now. Will advise if I have a recurrence.

I don't know whether this will be helpful. I faced the same issue. In the login screen press Option+F5. It will activate voice something. If it is continuously saying application it means there is an application running from prevnting you from entering the login info. What you have to do is click on the name field and type one letter. you have to do this fast. For each letter you have to click and type. Do the same for password section. It will help you to get in to your laptop. After that find the god **** application and delete it.

I found a solution. it worked for me. i repeatedly clicked on the cursor and typed the letters of my password. Keep clicking on the cursor and tap on the first letter of your password. Several attempts letter you'll see the letter being typed.. struggle your way like this and type the entire password. Once you get logged in.. The problem no longer exists 🙂

Wow.

First occurance: Did the keyboard stop working while the Mac was alive and awake, or did you notice the first time... when, after waking up from sleep, or after having been logged out and then logging back in, or after shut-down and rebooting?

What was the last thing you did with (or to) the machine before it happened? Please don't say "nothing". Any software or hardware installed or removed, any other setup change... anything?

same issue here, and no threads I've found were able to help me.

2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 MacBook Pro (bought sept.2012)

battery power ran-out, and upon plugging in and booting my keyboard is unresponsive and trackpad doesn't register mouseclick. Tried powering-down and rebooting multiple times, same result... stuck at user login screen.

MY fix: simply closed the screen, to put in sleep-mode, opened back up and voila! keyboard works, as well as trackpad.

hopefully this helps you get running again, AND maybe helps me find someone with an answer as to why this happened/stop from happenening again. next time, i will most likely just take it to applecare.
