Exact same issue.  Don't plan on using a "work around".  This is totally an apple issue and expecting them to fix it...

    QuickTime 7.7.2

    iPhone 4s with iOS 6.0

    Windows XP, SP3

I am having the exact same problem as all of you. And now tonight, Picasa won't even import the new videos that I'm making. So now I have two problems. None of this was going on with the old operating system. This is very frustrating! Has anyone spoken to apple support in person?

Same issue here too!  Trying to view video from iPhone 4s on computer with (Windows XP).  Using Quicktimes 7.7.2 Pro.  Audio works - video is black.  Video plays fine via iTunes, but I need to edit it in Quicktimes Pro that I just purchased.  Can anyone assist with this, Bueller??

    Yep me too, won't play.

    Iphone 5/windows 7.

The problem must be in the encoding that the phone uses for the .mov format.

I have transcoded the mov video to mp4 and avi and both will play sound as normal but stick on the first frame of the video.

Tested in quicktime 7.7.2, windows media player (W7), and VLC 2.0.2. Even Picasa won't play it (and it plays older iphone videos fine).

Anyone else not able to check for updates in QuickTIme?  (Help>>Update Existing Software)  Can connect to their sight for all other functions but not this one.  Is this a good sign that they are at least aware of the problem, possibly disabling the update function until there is a resolution?  Am I the only one with this problem?  (Windows XP, SP3)

I was also not able to check for updates - says it can't find my internet connection or that my server is not online.  No problems with the internet - must be a Quicktimes issues. ***** - because I upgraded to Pro to edit video and I can't even use it.  Wish I could get a refund.

This did the trick for me!!  Thanks.

It has been bothering me for some time now.  I just have to make sure I don't have QT auto updates now!

I had the same problem which started about 2 weeks ago.  Just uninstalled QuickTime 7 and installed the older 7.6 as you suggested.  It WORKS! Thanks for sharing.

My problem is that I cannot play video on my IPhone 4S. It keeps stopping every mili second and it is driving me mad. I never had this problem before. I have IOS5. This problem is affecting my skype as well, it does not work as well as it used to and it is very upsetting when you are trying to get hold od family and friends. I have a long commute to work and I am always watching something on youtube to stop me from falling asleep but all it does is makes you more frustrated. Sometimes my network it really good but if i am trying to find something on google for example it tells me no internet connections. I have tried to get in touch of my carrier just to put my mind at rest. They tried to help me and everything they instructed me to do did not work. So please can someone get back to me on this as my phone is my neccessity.

I had this issue, too. If you're dealing with the same problem: it is NOT the fault of Quicktime.

After some experimentation, I discovered that the problem is most likely the sync or iPhoto (if you used that app, like I did).  Initially, I made the mistake of grabbing all my video and image files from my phone after an update with iPhoto...and then I deleted them from the phone. I don't believe iPhoto is up to the task of decoding a video they were playing black in Quicktime with no audio. Even when I transfered them back to the iphone they played this way.

This was partially my should have been common sense not to use a photo application to deal with videos. Nevertheless...

The simplest way to pull these videos (on a Mac) is to use the image capture App instead of iphoto, syncing videos or even imovie (iMovie will work...but it's inconvenient). Image Capture can be found under the finder menu: Go > Applications

I took another video and then tried to pull it off the phone with image capture and it worked flawlessly.

I do find it a little ironic that it was easier for me to pull recorded media off of my iOS device with a Windows machine than it is with my new MacBook. My wish is that the iphone would appear like any other external storage device which you could open and drag/n/drop files...

Yes, same problem. Video's are black screen, but audio plays. In Picasa that is. Quicktime 7.7 just hangs on a black screen.

The mentioned work around worked! Back to QuickTime 7.6 instead of the newest version.

    iPhone 4S

    iOS 6

Having the exact same issue here!

Has anyone else attempted to rename the files? Does it give an error that the file cannot be renamed because it is playing in another program?

I just uninstalleed version 7.7 and installed 7.6 and now all my videos work.  You have to disable compatibility mode, ( explains when you try to play a vido), and works like a charm!

EXACT same problem here, and same for my iPad.  Fortunately I have a service plan..  So far about 6 hours with tech support, who found this thread.  Your comments are now very useful in that this thread appears to be the only data base on this issue for Apple to recognize the bug and get a fix done.
