Is there dust inside camera lens of iPhone 5?
I bought my new iPhone 5 on 28th of September from a local Telco.
Today I noticed inside the camera lens there is dust.
I'm very disappointed 😊
iPhone 5, iOS 6
In Brasilia, on iPlace, Parkshopping.
I'm in Montreal.
I went to the store, the Genius told me, he could exchange it for me, but since he did not find any "defect" in the image, he was suggesting me to keep it as is. He opened the camera app and told me everything looks perfect, and said that dust are normal. Since i kept insisting i want an exchange, he finally gave it to me.
had the same issue, popped into my local apple store - and they replaced it within minutes. just make sure theres no user damage and your warranty covers you or you have an applecare plan.🙂
was your phone on 1 year warranty or on applecare? I contacted the Brazilian apple support by phone and they said the applecare doesn't work here and I might be charged to fix the phone, but when I bought it, I told to the Genius that I was moving to Brazil and he said it was an international warranty. :S
Mine was just on the regular warranty. But warrant is international (my 4S had an issue - bought In Belgium but replaced in England) and just go the your local/regional apple store. Apple care should apply to your product.
Good luck.
Hello,
So 1 month ago I went to the Apple Store to exchange for a new iPhone 5S because of dust in the lens. Now, 1 month later, I have even MORE dust in this new iPhone 5S! But I won't be able to exchange it because the dust has to affect negatively the picture quality and I have no idea how to prove that to the Genius.
This is SAD!!!!
It's interesting to find out that it's also an issue on the 5S as well as the 5. I won't be upgrading.
If you want to demonstrate the quality issue, find a clean wall or large surface that is a single color and take a pic of it. If you take a photo of a gray wall, for instance, there will be dark, blurry spots if the dust obscures part of the image. I'm not sure how well it would work with a white wall, but I know that a bright color works well.
I know your post is old but my iPhone 5's camera just started producing the same kind of "specs" in my photos. I've had my iPhone 5 since it launched in 2012.
Was it ever determined if it was dust/particles inside the camera? Or, was it a lens scratch, or something else?
Thanks,
Tony
Same here – it stinks. The dust wasn't there originally, but I noticed it after the 1 year warranty was used up. The Genius at the Apple Retail Store said that dust can get in there if the iPhone is submerged in dust (like in my pocket). But what the heck?? How does this even happen?
The problem I have is that the camera doesn't seem to focus properly, or it takes a long time, due to the dust.
Well, were you under warranty? I'm not, and they said that I would need to buy a new iPhone... one that might get more dust under the lens. Not an option for me.
For that kind of stuff that is not user caused, I would recommend taking it to an Apple Retail Store to get it fixed if it's still under warranty. They come with an automatic one year warranty from date of activation, but it depends on if you've bought extra warranty for those with older models.
Well they aren't doing replacements if it's not under warranty. The guy said that dust in my pocket can get into the lens, but I call BS on it being my fault. There is no excuse for dust getting into there. Obviously, they didn't build the phone right.
Next time I'm near the store, I'm going to talk to the manager about it, and I'll come back with any news.
I have bought an iPhone 5 from a friend.
Two Major issues.
1. Dust inside the camera lens
2. Box Imei number do not match with that in fone.
What should I do? I dont have any reciepts where I could know where was it bought and when.
I have checked on apple website, the fone still got 3 months of validity in warranty.
there must be a design defect in the iPhone 5 resulting in poor seal between the camera lens and camera sensor module inside the case.
My original iPhone 5 got a LOT of dust inside the lens after owning it only a few months - picture quality from the camera was severely affected, to the point where I stopped bothering to take pictures.
There were maybe half a dozen large specks causing dark visible splotches in all pictures plus many more soft out-of-focus lighter splotches visible in photos with light backgrounds or lots of sky - the type of splotch that's familiar to anyone with a DSLR and out-of-focus dust on the sensor.
I never had this problem previously with my iPhone 3GS or my iPhone 4S.
After about 5 months I luckily had my iPhone 5 replaced under warranty for a different issue (power button problem) - I then had a perfectly clean/new camera again and no more spots in the photos.
But now after only 2 months of using this refurbished iPhone 5 I can once again see some specs of dust INSIDE the lens. Luckily they're not in the middle of the lens, nor are there too many dust specs (yet) so picture quality is still good. But it looks like only a matter of time before the dust problem once again takes over and affects the images.
sigh. oh well at least I still have time remaining on my AppleCare+ warranty, I will be sure to bring it back to the Apple Store when the problem gets bad again...
