A1048 Volume keys not recognized

I am on a mid 2012 macbook pro (not retina) running 10.8.2.

I have connected my A1048 Apple Keyboard:

Most of the keys work fine, except the four keys above the numpad:

Volume Down, Volume Up, Mute and Eject.

Keyboard viewer doesn't show them either:

Keyboard setup assistant doesn't recognize the keyboard:

(the key is a "Z")

What should I do to make those keys work? I don't really need the Eject key but I use the other three quite often. Also, the keys work on my older (early 2008) macbook pro with 10.6.8.

That's a pretty old keyboard, isn't it? I seem to recall having a similar keyboard with a 2002 Power Mac G4... I'm guessing that it's just too out-of-date to be recognized by newer systems. Because I wanted a numeric keypad with my MBP and Apple Thunderbolt Dispay, I bought this Apple USB keyboard from Amazon and can attest that it works splendidly with newer MBPs and OS X 10.8.2.

It may just be time to get a new keyboard...

It's from 2005.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'd rather use a keyboard with "3D" keys 🙂 I find it easier to type with such keyboard.

And to clarify: Keyboard Setup Assistant does not recognize the keyboard even on Snow Leopard, but the keys work anyway.

I vaguely remember installing a special keyboard update on the Snow Leopard machine a couple of years ago, but I can't find any keyboard update for Mountain Lion.

Since you still have AppleCare for your new computer, why don't you give them a call and see if they can suggest a 'fix'? I've actually grown to love this keyboard although I've only been using it for a little over three weeks now - of course, for six years I used only the keyboards on my MacBook Pros, so the 'switch', for me, was relatively simple...

Good luck,

Clinton
