iPad 3, iOS 6, Wifi issues

This is exactly what happens to my iPad 3 with iOS 6.0.1. I hoped to travel with iPad this holiday, but I will have to take my PC instead!

I have an iPad 3. I waited to upgrade to iOS 6. After upgrading to iOS 6 I started having trouble with my WiFi connection.

I have gone through the various power cycles and resets that have been described in these forums. I have found something interesting.

My iPad 3 connects to my WPA2 WiFi network after it starts up. Things go along OK. I can break it every time by running the Speedtest.Net application. Once I run that app no other app on the iPad can get a network connection via WiFi. I can go back to the Speedtest.Net app and it works fine.

Another way I can break it is letting the iPad go to "sleep", wait a few minutes and turn it back on. The WiFi network connection shows that I am connected, but I cannot access the network.

I can fix it by turning WiFi off and back on again.

I believe there is a problem with iOS 6 because I can break WiFi for all applications by running a single app, Speedtest.net but WiFi still works for Speedtest.net.

I really wish I didn't upgrade to iOS 6. I am going to contact Applecare tomorrow and ask about reverting back to 5.x.

Went in to apple today with my ipad 3.

I've been having the probs with wifi as well, it reconises the network and allows me to enter the password ( if it is wrong it refuses it, therefore proving it identifies the network) but then just gives me the forever spinning wheel!

The ipad is a couple of months out of warranty and i was told that i just have to wait for apple to come up with an upgrade, when.... who knows. Not really acceptable considering that I, like most other apple customers, have a large amount of apple stock in my house and should be a valued customer.

Maybe naive but surley when a company can't beta test satisfactorily, a warranty should be given on software updates as well as hardware. Maybe two months after the release date, if all glitches are not ironed out you are provided with a new ipad, iphone etc as at the moment mine is completely useless and it is solely apples issue.

One thing is for certain, I will not be updating my software quickly in the future.

Just wanted to add my experiences to this and how I found a work around. I'm an IT Admin and my boss recently upgraded his iPad to 6.0.1 and hit problems with his home WiFi. His same iPad on the office WiFi works fine.

For him, iOS 6 was not an issue, only when going to 6.0.1

The problem was affecting use of the iTunes store and NetFlix, both would load but show a blank screen. I understand from reading elsewhere that Facebook is another affected app, although he never confirmed this. Browing using Safari and using Email was fine.

After ruling out the iPad iteslf and other things like his iTunes account I started looking around on these discussion forums. Other may have spotted this, but it looks like apps that do some authentication are affected by this issue.

We had already tried changing the date forward as a suggested solution. This did not work.

We then took the carpet bomb approach of changing lots of things. Changing the language in iOS was one of the first (switched to French, then back to English), which may have fixed the issue. At the same time I also changed the following settings on his home Draytek 2820, under Wireless LAN...

Under General Settings...

Wireless Mode: Changed from "Mixed (11b+11g+11n)" to "11n only 2.4Ghz"

Channel: Changed from "Auto" to "Channel 6 2437Mhz"

Packet Overdrive (Tx Burst): Changed from 'enabled' to 'disabled'

Under Advanced Settings...

Operation Mode: Changed from 'Mixed' to 'Greenfield'

The other settings under Advanced Settings were left unchanged...

Channel Bandwidth: set to "20/40"

Guard Interval: set to "auto"

Aggregation MSDU: set to "enable"

I'm not sure which of the above actually fixed this issue as we changed them all at once. I'm also not sure how these settings translate to other manufacturers routers, but I hope they help somehow.

This weekend I was trying to figure out if there was something on my network causing a conflict or some kind of collision. So I downloaded a couple of apps (to my iPhone 4 iOS 6.01) from the iTunes App store just to see which devices my router was seeing. After trying a couple apps and doing various SCANS and PINGS and such, I noticed that everything was working awesome on my iPhone. I have a cable modem and when things are right, they're really right. I grabbed my iTouch 4 (iOS 6.00) and did the same thing. Next thing I know they're both streaming, surfing, and everything else one could want. Hmmm. After a day or so, things were starting to act up again with my iPhone. I went to the app: IP Network Scanner and let it SCAN then PING'd my own device. Waddyaknow?! Starts working again!

A lotta folks are saying they've found the glitch or have a solution. Problem is, nobody knows exactly what they're doing to fix it and the problem usually comes back after awhile.

Apple certainly is aware of the problem and 100% knows how to fix it. I get why VPs are losing their jobs at Apple right know, iOS 6 was a mistake for Apple and a mistake for us the users. It's always a shame when big corporations would rather deny they've made a mistake than actually help their customers. We love you Apple but this ain't right!

My problem with wifi network on iPad mini (iOS 6.0.2) was that I couldn't use app store or itunes directly from the device (safari, skype, youtube were working correctly). No matter how long I've waited it showed updating or simply blank screen. To fix it, you have to go to wifi router administration website and lookup its DNS addresses. Then go to iPad wifi settings and change it to this looked up address and bingo it works 🙂 correctly now.

I have no problem connecting at home. However, during a recent hospital stay, I tried to connect to the hospital WiFi...........which my iPad3 recognized, and showed that it was not password secured. However, that's as far as I ever got.......it would not connect.It showed the network and then nothing happened. Luckily, I have the 3G VZ version, so I was able to buy some data to use, but I honestly would have preferred not to do that.

Under the circumstances, I neither had the stamina or clear-headedness to try to figure out what was wrong and how to fix it. Does anyone have any suggestions that I might try for a fix if it's needed again? I know for a fact that I never had a problem in August logging on to free WiFi spots in hotels during a vacation that we took. Of course, that was before IOS 6, I think. I have not updated to IOS 6.0.1 because I've sort of learned my lesson about jumping on new updates right away 😉.....at least with Android updated. I have had no problems with IOS 6......until I ran across this little annoying problem!!

Hospitals typically do not provide free WiFi access. Did the hospital specifically tell you it was available? Just because a network has no password doesn't mean it is free access. If this is the hospital's network they may require a VPN connection or some other secure connection. And even if you were able to connect to it that doesn't mean you have access to the Internet through it. Who knows what it was for. Unless you were advised that this network was for free patient access to the Internet you should not assume such.

Actually, this hospital does indeed provide free guest WiFi access to patients and visitors. It is listed on their internet site as allowing people to "stay connected. Therefore, I am not "assuming" anything. There was a "guest' access and a "mobile" access. I tried both, with the same result on my iPad.

As a matter of fact, I also had my NOOK Simple Touch with me and it connected to the "guest" connection immediately and even downloaded previous book purchases I had not yet downloaded. It appears only the iPad had a problem, but thanks for your help.

After I upgraded to iOS 6.0.1 I ran into wifi problems too. Whenever my iPad went into standby/sleep mode, the wifi connection would drop, no other wifi device in the house had any issues. After turning the iPad back on, it was a hassle to reconnect to our home network. At first it would be enough to toggle the airplane mode on and back off, after a couple days, that was not enough no more. I constantly had to renter the network password.

I followed instructions on this and other forums, rebooting this that and the other, can't remember what all. I even restored the iPad to factory settings, without restoring from backups. It all did not help. I was to a point where I considered a visit to an apple store.

Then I recalled reading something about implementation of IPv6 or so. Now I hav to mention my router is an older linksys model (wrt110) and I always wanted to upgrade to an N network. After setting up the new router, a linksys E2500, changing to a new SSID, using WPA2 and all that, everything connected and stayed connected.

from this experience I guess it is an issue with the iPad / router combination. Whose fault? No idea.

I had a ATT 2wire modem router for my already crappy DSL when I got my wifi ipad 3 in October. I took OTA updates up to 6.0.1 and never had an issue. Well my 2wire went out, so I replaced it with a cheap ebay dsl modem and an old wifi b/g router I had - Westell branded and I started having issues where surfing would work well sometimes, and others it would hang and time out when loading a page. Everything other device I had worked fine on wifi - no other iOS device though.

Still under waranty, I called Apple care to which they had no answers but suggested I take it to an apple store, so I did. They acted like they had never heard of such a problem, but exchanged my ipad for another. I got home to find that it was loaded with 5.1.1 and what a surprise - my issues were gone. Needless to say I will not be taking any updates until well after their release, and if I was out of waranty I'd be livid about having to jailbreak or sit and wait to get my ipad to work.

In my case, after update to 6.0.1, iPad (WiFi + cellular) was dropping network exactly on AirPort Express.

Moreover, AirPort Express was not visible in the AirPort utility, on both iOS 6.0.1 and Mac OS X 10.8.2.

After changing AirPort router IP and IPs given to WiFi clients to 192.168.1.x (was 192.168.2.x), it seems to work.

Conserning this workaround in regard to your words: IP address subnet is surely an external factor to iOS, but the problem does happen in iOS.

OK...I installed the latest version of IOS (6.1) to my IPAD 2 last night. Everything now works. I can use the web for sites that I have to log into (facebook, pintrest, etc), my magazine subscriptions will download. Did not notice anything specific in the list of bug fixes that elude to what was wrong. I have AT&T as my home ISP. I saw that they added more ISP for LTE. Maybe this had something to do with it? Can't imagine that was it though.

Finallly...I have my Ipad back.

Wow I thought I was the only one with the 'inactive' subscription in the newsstand app, but showing active in the iTunes account. The problems is on my iPad3 (retina but prior to lightning adapter ;-)) yet randomly the same app works fine on 2 other iPhones and an iPad2 in the same house using the same network, the same account etc.

I went through the restore to default etc and got nowhere - luckily the newsstand app offers a non-iTunes method of digital subscription - but did to ever figure of what the issue was?

Again - this isn't any network related issue, I guess something screwy with the newsstand app. Subscriptions I'm questioning..
