Step by Step Procedures to Create Free Ringtone on iTunes 10

1. Launch iTunes and pick a song you want to convert to ringtone

2. Right-click on the song and click “Get Info” to view the song properties

User uploaded file

3. Select “Options” tab. Check and fill in the “Start time” and “Stop time” to extract the portion of song you want to create as ringtone. Ensure the length is not longer than 30 seconds. Otherwise, iTunes will not recognize it as a ringtone. When you are ready, click “OK” to confirm.

4. Again, right-click on the song and select “Create ACC Version”.

6. Next, right-click on the song and select “Show in Finder”. This will launch Finder and locate the song file you just created.

Note: For Windows user, you should choose “Show in Windows Explorer” instead.

8. Next, go back to iTunes. Right-click on the song you have created and select “Delete”.

User uploaded file

9. Click “Remove” to confirm the removal and then click “Keep File” when you’re prompted. This instructs iTunes to remove the song (the 30 sec version) from iTunes library and keep the actual file.

10. Go back to Finder and double-click on the ringtone file (.m4r) you have just renamed. The ringtone will automatically add it to iTunes’ ringtone library. You can now sync it to iPhone using iTunes. Enjoy your new ringtone!

I followed these directions and lost my original music. Using PC with Safari and iPhone 5. Had to REBUY the original music.

I am a brand new iPhone 5 user - have used Android phones for years and never before encountered this kind of nonsense proprietary runaround with Apple just to install ringtones on a phone. This is what I was worried about. This should be SIMPLE. I will be returning this iPhone 5 phone back because of things like this. There isn't anything worth needing to sync to our computers every night, renaming files, having to follow online computer tutorials, and dollowing 42 complicated steps AFTER we've paid $300 per phone plus the insurance and all the little cases and do-dads to go with it, and have now lost music we've paid for already and having to now RE-buy and RE-install on iTunes JUST to be able to do simple things like download a simple ringtone that other phones are able to do without putting the customer through all this expense and hours of work. Apple's proprietary strangleholds are at the expense of the consumer experience and ease of use. Been working on downloading ringtones now for over 48 hours and there are 6 of us with new phones in our town that have all but given up. 3 of us are sending them back.

I'm beyond disillusioned with this product and the company philosphy behind it.

This is not a big problem. (Did you move the file before you tried to delete? - Is there a "Revome" option?)

Anyway, locate the m4r file that you renamed and drag it to Tones section of iTunes. If you not finding "Tones" go to iTunes preferences>General and check the "Tones" check box.

Make sure you check Sync In Tones tab in Sync option page of iTunes.

It took me two hours the evening I bought my phone to get a ringtone working (really, Apple? This is ease of use?) I followed the instructions above and finally got it to work. However, the ringtone only functioned for a day. Now, it shows up in Itunes under tones and will play there, but when I try to sync it to my phone, I get the message "Filename cannot be synced. File not found." I've tried dragging it from my desktop back into ITunes, that hasn't worked. Actually, I think that's the message I get. At the moment, I cannot sync to my phone at all, because "Sync failed to start."

What the.....

For such a sophisticated device, the iphone can't do some of the most basic things.

My problem seems to be with step 7. When i click Show in Windows Explorer, it shown the file name without showing an extension. When I change the name by adding .m4r, it appanrently changes the name to that, but continues to treat the file as an .m4a file (as shown in Properties). Where do I go to change the extension and how do I change it when I get there? Please help.
