How do you change your ring tone to music from your itunes?
iPhone 5, iOS 6
Step by Step Procedures to Create Free Ringtone on iTunes 10
1. Launch iTunes and pick a song you want to convert to ringtone
2. Right-click on the song and click “Get Info” to view the song properties
3. Select “Options” tab. Check and fill in the “Start time” and “Stop time” to extract the portion of song you want to create as ringtone. Ensure the length is not longer than 30 seconds. Otherwise, iTunes will not recognize it as a ringtone. When you are ready, click “OK” to confirm.
4. Again, right-click on the song and select “Create ACC Version”.
5. iTunes then automatically extracts the portion of song you have instructed in the previous step. The new song file is just 30-sec in length. That’s the song you work on from step 6 and onwards.
6. Next, right-click on the song and select “Show in Finder”. This will launch Finder and locate the song file you just created.
Note: For Windows user, you should choose “Show in Windows Explorer” instead.
7. Rename the file extension from “.m4a” to “.m4r”.
8. Next, go back to iTunes. Right-click on the song you have created and select “Delete”.
9. Click “Remove” to confirm the removal and then click “Keep File” when you’re prompted. This instructs iTunes to remove the song (the 30 sec version) from iTunes library and keep the actual file.
10. Go back to Finder and double-click on the ringtone file (.m4r) you have just renamed. The ringtone will automatically add it to iTunes’ ringtone library. You can now sync it to iPhone using iTunes. Enjoy your new ringtone!
You 're welcome.
I have read through this entire thread and I have a ringtone labeled .m4r in my Tones itune folder (and a backup on my desktop) but cannot get it to load on my iphone. I've tried sync several times and also tried to just drag it to the device (which seems the easiest) but neither has worked.
I am in the same boat. Just got an iPhone 5 and followed all the steps. I can find the new mpr files that was created but they won't appear in my tones folder. It says they are ringtones and I cannot drag them to the tones section of iTunes. Double clicking doesn't do anything but play the newly created song. The tones still has no songs on it. Help?

If you were having problems converting your ringtone from a .m4a to a .m4r I have found a solution!
Try this: http://neyugn.wordpress.com/2008/08/08/m4a-to-m4r/
It was taking me hours to figure it out and just when I was giving up I found that site, it helped me a lot and worked perfectly!
You are very welcome. 🙂
I have completed all the steps necessary, and my iTunes even recongizes I have 1 Tone in my lirbary. I have checked the relevant boxes to make sure the Tone syncs with my iPhone, but it will not show up as a Tone in my iPhone. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
I have the same issue and I just did what you've mentioned on your post.
Thanks mate.
Hi, Everything worked great, up until the point where I had to sync the tone to my iphone. Whenever I try to sync it, I always end up recieving a message from itunes saying that the tone was not copied onto my phone because the file was not found...Please help!
Juat drag the ringtone from Tones from library to your Tones under devices.
That helps for me when I have the same issues like yours.
I tried doing this, but it never shows up under the tones for the device either....
I am having trouble in that I get to step 8 - delete and I dont get an option to keep the file - it just goes! I cant find the 'trash' folder either. please help!
Select the file from Music Library, not from playlist.
If you want to create ringtones WITHOUT using iTunes, you use an alternative method. First cut your music down to the length you want, then convert the mp3 to .m4r file type using mp3tom4r.com, then sync with with iTools. Check out this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmvTr40B-Tc It's very helpful.
Drag the files from iTunes to desktop before you delete it.
