iOS 6: Music playback issues?

After upgrading to ios 6 I've found an extremely annoying problem regarding music playback. iOS 6 doesn't seem to remember where you last paused a playlist, album, etc... it always starts back at the last place you originally started it.

For example:

I have an album with 12 songs. I start it on track 4, listen to a few songs on the way to work. Pull the headphone cord once I arrive and Music pauses as expected. When I return to the car for the drive back home, instead of resuming playback where I left off, it starts back at track 4 again.

Another example:

Let's say I want to listen to an artist, so I go to "All Songs" and just hit shuffle so it plays randomly. I listen to a few tracks here and there, skip a few, all is good. Just as with albums, when I stop playback and resume later it will always return back to the first song played, and play then back in the same order again.

Am I missing a setting or something? I searched the settings app may times and can't find anything even close. Does it have anything to do with me pausing the player by removing the headphone cord? Could it be some app I am using between pauses?

Never had issues with ios 5, so this is defenitely software related. iOS 5 used to remember where I last played music over days -- even if I were to watch videos on the iPhone or listen to Pandora between music playback.

I've been having success with mine ever since doing it this way:

-open music player app

-push stop

Then when coming back to play again:

-open music player app

-push play

I tend to keep the music player in the tray instead of closing it

I've found that this works where as if you just disconnect from the earphones jack, or use the double click of the home button to only run the music player will cause the issue to occur.

It's a bit of a pain in the neck but it's a work around.

Who cares if the problem is fixed in iOS7...that won't resolve the situation for any of us with a 4th gen or older. My 4th gen isn't even 2 years old yet!!?? Why should I pay $300 for a new device when apart from the music app, this one works fantastic.

I actually had this replaced under warranty at about a year old (battery issues) and both have had this same music playing issue.

we should all care that they fix it in 7, because then maybe it will be fixed across the board. they know that a vast number of people have older devices, and that this is a critcal selling point of their phones-they always support all their platforms. if they don't fix it in 7, that would mean that they don't acknowledge it as a problem, and then there's no chance at all of it being fixed.

Guru, after closing your apps, did you also power cycle your device (i.e. turn your phone off and back on)? That is to the only way to be sure all your temporary memory was purged. I would try that...

Keep in mind memory can fill up even if only one app is in use, especially if a particular app is memory-hungry (e.g. a large game, browsers, or an app that uses tons of photos or video like YouTube). If you use even one of these apps extensively, it will force iOS to max out its memory usage and thus affecting music player.

As an experiment, I suggest closing your apps, power cycling, then minimizing use of your device for a few hours to see what happens.

Yes, I have actually tried all of that.

Here is the thing though, your post comes off a little bit as saying its my own fault the device does this and lets apples software off the hook. The problem is due to the OS and nothing more. It is sad that my ipod touch 2g works better at playing my music than the much more advanced and powerful iphone 4s. We should not have to jump through all of these hoops just to keep our playlist active and have the device remember the last song played.

Here is the other thing that really drives me nuts. The device ALWAYS remembers where I was on my video files. all of them. But it can't remember where I was on my music? That is unacceptable.

Still doesn't work in iOS 7 (Gold Master release). In fact, it seems worse.

- If you pause part way through a song, the playback will begin at the beginning of the song if you resume after an hour or so.

- If paused longer than an hour, playback will resume at some song in the playback history. Never seems to be consistent. Can be 20+ songs, can 5 songs in the history. Usually get frustrated and reshuffle the playlist.

- A few times after being paused for a while (not sure of the length of time), the iPhone will begin playing all songs on the device rather than the playlist that was previoulsy playing.

- More than once the Music app opened to the iTunes Radio icon being highlighted rather than Now Playing.

I have very little confidence that this will be corrected by Wednesday.

APPLE - PLEASE FIX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is such a huge issue that I cannot fathom why it hasn't been fixed yet. Certainly it must affect thousands of people, us being the vocal minority. The absense of a fix in ios7 is extremely disheartening. I would strongly recommend that everyone subscribed to this thread go through "proper" channels, since it's clear Apple does not take their own discussion boards seriously. Fill out the link here, possibly linking back to this discussion:

Very disheartened to hear it hasn't been fixed, although I sort of expected it once betas didn't seem to fix it.

Has anyone tried any of the following solutions and can confirm they don't work? I don't really want to try them if they are going to fail and then have to spend the time "restoring" my phone:

1) removing all music from the phone (blank sync) and then re-adding the music?

2) any of the various "Resets" in the "reset" menu (all settings, network settings...)?

3) completely blanking their iphones and starting from scratch?

Has anyone found any correlations as to why it's affecting some and not others (or is it affecting everyone?) Is it people with very large libraries or too many playlists or people who are still using iOS10? (I am) or people who created their playlists with a very old version of itunes?

I am very curious. Has anyone stated from scratch with a brand new iOS6 installation and still achieved this issue (without restoring their former settings?)

I have another (perhaps unrelated, or perhaps not) problem on my iphone in that my music app itself sometimes takes a long time to load and on occasion, it "tries' to load but then crashes before any of the text or menus come up. I can play music (somtimes) in this state via siri or via the lock-screen play control, but if I try to open the music app itself (manually, or by clicking on a song in my spotlight search), it crashes. This goes on for a period before it finally works and then doesn't seem to have any issue for a while.

I have a 4s and the battery life seems to be about the same.

There are a lot of new features that are useful like quick access to wifi, Bluetooth and brightness settings. Plus a flashlight app that us built in and also easily accessible. iPhone Search is now integrated into every page. The interface feels fresh with the "flat" style.

If the rest of the family didn't have iPhones, I would have already switched to a HTC One or Galaxy S4. We use the Find My IPhone app frequently to track each other.

I am annoyed by this bug since i updated my iPod4g to iOS 6 (have not noticed it with 5, but i'm not sure about it)Now i am at a point where no new updates will be issued for my device, so it will never be fixed. I could not find a patch for jailbroken iOS either (i don't do any warez with jb, i only need it to access the hosts file, but that's another story). But i am quite diappointed. I bought it about 2 years ago for almost $500, and this bug is ancient, it's ridiculus that i have to live with it for that money. I guess they would lauch at me if i would ask for a refund, right? I think i was patient enough with waiting for the fix...
