MACBOOK PRO / MINIDISPLAY PORT TO HDMI / 1080P / BLACK LINES

I am using Macbook Pro Mid 2010 with OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

It is connected with Full HD TV+Monitor LG M2352D

Using Cable : MiniDisplay Port to HDMI Port

On LG TV it only has 2 options for Aspect Ratio - 16:9 & 4:3 [Current Option - 16:9]

Macbook Pro > [Current] Display Settings > Mirroring > 1080P & 60 Hertz (NTSC)

There are 2 black lines on both sides (Left & Right) on LG TV screen when connected to Macbook Pro with above available settings.

I would really appreciate if you could help me out to have 1080P HDMI output on Full Screen on external display (LG TV).

Thank you very much.

Hello Alex,

Following are my MacBook Details:

MacBook Pro

13 inch

Mid 2010

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB

OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

I can only view 1080p when I close Mac's lid. After closing the lid, the HDMI (via MDP) allows the video output to be that of the monitor (only). Also, there are no black lines on the side of the Monitor. The output covers the whole monitor's screen.

Hope it helps!

Hey 4044,

thank you very much for your reply,

see from your configuration, i thought the difference is the graphic card issue, mine is Intel 3000 which is not so either, tonight i will try to connect to dvi adapter and then to HDMI, if can not work, then i will just gave up to VGA and give it a try.

thanks again, 4044! hah

@4044 hey, there, my problem solved just now, too!

this is for those who have the same problem like me, hope can help more people.

my macbook configuration is

2011-mid 13"

Intel graphics HD 3000 384MB

the problem at first is: can connect to my HD monitor Dell S2340L, and can show image, but only can show on the dell monitor if the dell monitor is set to resolution 720P or below, if set to 1080i or 1080p all can not work, will keep flash and have black line column.

since i am using a macbook air, unlike macbook pro that can switch graphic card, have tried many ways to do it.

after change "MDP male to HDMI male" cable for 2 times, finally go and change to "MDP to DVI adapter" connect "DVI adapter to HDMI male", finally works really well.

before this solution, i actually thought this would not have solution at all due to the macbook air 13" is using Intel graphics HD 3000 384MB, which may not be so well done in double desktop. but the dvi adapter works just great, hope these can solve some one else's problem.

It may help if you reboot the problem so to speak. Follow theses simple instructions and the MacBook Pro should see the monitor again. What you'll be doing is wiping out any nastiness the Mac has adopted along the way and giving it a chance to fellow at the monitor. It kind of gets itself into a routine once it's not seeing the monitor. It will keep telling itself "nah, there's no monitor there, because there wasn't last time I looked"!

Ok, so let's try this....

Shut down the laptop.

Once restarted, hold down the shift, alt and cmd keys and press the power button once. Nothing should happen visually or audibly? And the laptop shouldn't start up?

Good.

Next with your left hand fingers hold down the Alt, the cmd and the R keys and press the power button once, immediately let go the power button and hold down the P key until you hear the second chime. When you hear the second start up chime, let go of all buttons...... And wait...... A bit longer than that. Tsk?

Ok, assuming your MBP has started up all good, now go to sys prefs and select display. Put a tick in the mirror box and click positively on the graphic showing the mirror screens (I think its blue.)

Step back, take a breath and wait a moment longer.... You should see the mirror image of your laptop screen appear on the monitor you are attempting to mirror on?

Hope this helps.... It worked for me!

Good luck

This should be done from the laptop at shutdown position, perhaps not obvious, so I thought I should mention it.

Hi Alex,

I am facing the same problem. I currently use a Macbook Pro 13" 2010 version running on OSX Mavericks and I recently bought a Dell S2340L.

It doesnt work on 1080p, black lines keep signalling then black screen. On 1080i, the picture does not go full screen and looks very blur. It only works on 720p but I want it to work on 1080p.

I use a MDP direct to HDMI. If I get a MDP to VGA adaptor then connect my VGA cable to the monitor will it enable me to use on 1080i?

Appreciate your soonest response.

Thanks,

Vincent

DisplayPort and Mini Displayport have a feature that allows the interface to request "Dual Mode". This re-programs the existing signals to the timing and pin assignments of Single-Link DVI or HDMI.

What some Mac Users found was that inexpensive adapters may not provide signals at DVI or HDMI levels. Some adapters (sold as ACTIVE Adapters) contain signal re-drivers. These tend to be much more reliable.

On the graphics cards for the Mac Pro 65lb silver tower, using more than two adapters often makes the third display drop out (due to low signal levels) Using ACTIVE adapters on all ports is required to restore proper operation.
