Okay...so i've spoken to a number of people about this...and not everyone has this problem. Don't know what causes it. Going to the Apple store tomorrow probably to find out more. Have an appointment. But I've realised I have to get my phone replaced anyways. Noticed that not only do i have this problem...but the left side of the speaker does not work. No sound comes out of it. Was wondering if anyone with this problem has this problem as well. Could be a hardware issue afterall!
P.S. The signals in my room aren't great. By lately with this phone so many of my calls have been dropping. Always a call failed thing when the call cuts. My 3GS barely didn that. Could jsut be bad signals at my end...but anyone having that issue at all as well???

Same problem with iPad 4 folks - jack accepts any standard jack but connectivity (sound levels ) are dependant on make/model of headset plugged in!!!
Getting a bit disenchanted with Apple at the moment.
RIP Steve J - he knew how to develop and launch a class product!!!

Same here. iP5 bought in Poland, maybe there is software limitation in UE countries? I'm disapointed, I'm music lover and it was my main portable player, now it's too qiet for a street...

I have the 4 and am having the same problem. My headphones will work fine for music, but phone calls come through so quiet you can barely hear them. I was hoping an upgrade to the 5 would fix this, as I have found NO solution through IOS updates or settings or anything else I've tried.

The maximum volume I can get on my new iPhone 5 is waaaaay too low and thin with or without a headphone. I spoke to both ATT and Apple support today. Apple support, while very nice and polite, as usual treated my issue as though it was the first time any customer had raised the issue. Their suggestions were, as usual tto go drastic and do a complete restore to be sure the software was installed correctly. I do have the latest version. They said if that did not fix the volume issues that it must be a hardware issue and to have the phone replaced at an Apple store. Now I see all over the web that many others worldwide are experiencing low speaker volume and low headphone volume. Also, in my case, many people I speak to on the phone using either the headphone mic or the phone only say they can not hear me well at all. I am going to make an appointment at the Apple store to have them test the volume. I will insist on a totally new phone and not accept the "reconditioned" phones they usually supply. My guess is that this is a HUGE known issue with a potentially enormous economic impact so I am sure employees are instructed to say nothing until we customers unite to insist on the proper hardware or software update...better than the silly bumper they offered for iPhone 4...
I will update you with what the Apple Store results are.

I recently returned my iphone 5 to the Apple Store due to the low headphone volume, wifi dropout, and the beveled edges wearing through to reveal the silver beneath, and the replacement iphone 5 has the same issue with low headphone volume. I guess it's the hardware, and not a software issue unfortunately.

I have the same issue with the iphone5 which I picked up yesterday. The sound is way too low to use and is reedy - it sounds like a call from an ancient telephone box. I am having to use the speaker to hear calls. Being able to hear a caller is about the most basic techical functional requirement for a phone right?! I shall take my phone back when I have time and exchange as it is not fit for purpose - no wonder they are keeping stumm about this problem with iphone 5!

I write in order to give some information maybe useful. I guess many of you have the iphone volume lower then Iphone 4S volume cos IT IS lower. You can even check it even on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone_5 (look in the "deisgn" paragraph).
I realised this 12% less can result in 2 step less in the volume bar, for instance I used to keep my iphone4 bar at 1 step less then the middle and now I have to keep my Iphone5 at 1 step more then the middle. When I purchased my Iphone5 (in Italy too) I thought it may have a volume issue, comparing it with the 4. Then I checked on internet to realise what I wrote above: the 5 is simply thinner, lighet .. and LOWER then its predecessor.
Last thing: some app like Viber, Tango, for Phone or similars may put the music volume lower, or at least it happened on my Iphone 4. What you have to do in this case is simply to double click on the cetral button (home) of your iphone and close the above mentioned app. The volume should return higher.
Should any of you have another kind of issue, your device is probably to be replaced.
Hope I gave some help
