What is the best Video Card I can get for an Early 2009 Mac Pro?

Hi everyone,


I'm looking to upgrade my video card in my early 2009 Mac Pro. I currently have two cards in there and I want to update one of them. - An ATI Radeon HD 4870 with 512mb VRam, and an NVidia GeForce GT 120 with 512mb VRam, neither of which produce very impressive numbers in Cinebench.


I do a little video edititng (FCP, AE, Premiere, Motion, etc) , dabble in 3d (Blender), and game a little. I would like to know what is the best video card I can currently get that can handle these three things and give me a decent boost in performance. I'm looking to spend between $300 and $1000, but cheaper is better.


I researched it a little and looked at what Mac Pro's currently come with (The ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB, available seperately here:

1. This is the BEST card I can get? And...
2. Will it work in my machine?


I see ATI has some nice cars out now like the Fire Pro Series:

Hi Rick,


In short yes. I have used both the nVidia GTX 570 and the 780 SC under Mavericks and they work great. I belive a lot has changed since my last posts... some of the ATI Radeon cards may now work with your Mac Pro, and Adobe made a commitment to support them and not just work with CUDA (NVidia excelleration). - They may already support them, I'm not sure, but bottom line... If you are working with After affects, and your currently running a GT 120 (Yikes 😉) you NEED to get a new card. At least one with CUDA cores. With the 120 you are rendering off the main chip... CPU not the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). The GPU is like have hundreds or even thousands of CPUs doing the rendering.


I was running the GTX 570, and it worked great! Plug N' Play (I am on a Mac Pro 4 as well) It is easy to install because it has 2 six pin power inputs and works within the allowed wattage that the mac pro supplies, other cards can pull too much juice and fry your computer. I highly recomend this card. A bit later I'll find some links for you that I found helpfull and bookmarked (If I can post them here) and put them up. I have since upgraded my 570 to a nVidia GTX 780 SuperClocked which is about 40% faster at rendering than the 570, but requires a seperate power supply. For this I got a 450 Watt CD drive bay PSU (Visiontek). This is beacuse the card requires a 6 pin and an 8 pin power cable which the computer does not supply. And it pulls slightly more power than the Mac's PSU cares to supply. The card and Drive bay PSU are easy to install but running the cables is a bit of a pain.


FYI, if you get one of these cards and have a mac cinema display you will need a $100 adapter from Kanex that converts the signal from DVI to Mini DV and allows use of the USB ports.


If you have $600-$700 lying around I say go for the GTX 780 + PSU, otherwise you can pick up a used GTX 570 cheap. I'll sell you mine for $200 🙂 Lightly used for 7 months 2.5GB version. One thing to note, the 570 is louder than the 780. The 570 is near whisper quiet during normal operation, but I don't even hear the 780. Maybe over time the 780 will get louder. The 570 did a little. During rendering they both get louder but niether are that bad. The noise level is tottaly tolerable.

and it said the GTX 120 draws 350 watts but the 570 draws 550 watts. But you are saying it works OOB with the 2009 Mac Pro power supply, correct?...If that is correct, then it's a no-brainer to get one, and I may very well buy yours, as this is my GPU info in After Effects-

As far as FCPX, I found this GTX 570 install tutorial, but it is for 10.7.5 so it may not apply, but is this basically the procedure?

Rick, I strongly suspect that you are misreading that power draw info. If those cards used that much power they would start glowing. I imagine that you are mistaking Total System Power for the whole system with the card as a part of total.


A Gt120 can't draw more than 75 Watts and a 570 won't draw more than 250.


Kevin, I can not guess why you would use a $100 DVI TO MDP adapter when all you needed was a $8 DP to MDP adapter.


Every GTX780 I have ever seen has a DP. (Looks like rectangle with one rounded corner)


DP is pin for pin the same as MDP, just need a cheapy adapter.


Biggest issue with 780 & Titan cards right now is the "B" issue.

1) Apple brand cards:

• Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5. (This card has just been discontinued and is no longer available from Apple dealers. There may be some new, old stock still available at resellers)

• Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450


2) "sold in the Apple store" cards

• NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200

• NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500


3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:

You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

One important correction.


The Mac Edition Quadros are in fact the Fermi based 4000 and the Kepler based K5000.


There is a Quadro 5000 but it is Fermi based and only came for Mac in an EFI flashed version.


There are a good many EFI flashed cards that offer boot screens and behave like official cards.


At the Netkas site are some roms and basic instructions to flash some cards at home.

The intent behind that "boilerplate" was to make sure that while 'experts debated the subtleties of one custom setup over another' that no casual readers (or those who got here by searching) would lose track of the "footnotes" -- issues like non-standard wiring, no boot screens, no support in certain computers and so on -- may need extra effort to overcome.


Tracking down each Original Poster's particular situation, and try to add the warnings that often are glossed over was getting tedious. So I tried to do it once and keep it up to date. The experts may be bored with my boilerplate, but newbies have been glad to have it all in one place.


Given my intention of avoiding confusion among non-experts, I solicit your suggestions for improvement.


¿ Should I add the word Fermi before 4000 ?

¿ Should the other entry read Kepler K5000 ?


¿ What additional clarifying wording do you suggest for flashed cards ?

I would do one of those "for more information about using and flashing non-Apple cards, please check out the various sites like Netkas (and others) that focus on and discuss what is known and available." They may even have their own pinned thread to help get people started and informed.

DPArt is correct, those figures don't make sense. I have read in a thousand places that the card draws around 250 watts. Same goes for the 780, from slashgear:


"This the GTX 780 Ti works with a design that's 533mm squared, bringing about 250 watts of power requirement for 0.47 watts required per square mm. "

I'm not sure why any card over 250 starts to become a problem since the mac has a 1000 watt PSU, but it does. Some people mod/re-route wires changing 6 pin to 8 and using Aux power from CD bays to avoid using a second PSU and pull power from the original PSU but more qualified people than me (macvidcards - http://www.ebay.com/usr/macvidcards) advise against it and suggest a second PSU. I can actually keep my GTX 780 in PCIE Slot 1 powered by my secondary PSU, and put my GTX 570 in PCIE slot 2 powered by the original MP PSU, and both will be utilized by the machine to render in After Effects. That brings me to another important point: You have to add the card name to a file in both after effects and Premeire for the CUDA acceleration to work (Google it, it's really easy)



@DPArt: The reason I use the Kanex adapter (Which is up to $129 Yikes) is because the adapter your referencing does not allow me to use the following that is built into my Cinema Display: Speakers / Microphone / WebCam / 3 USB Ports / Cappuccino Machine

@Grant & Hatter, thanks for the additional info. Rick, it's been covered a thousand times but yes, it is worth re-re-re-re-repeating... These cards are not officially supported by Mac, and will not give you the EFI boot screen (The grey screen with the apple that tells you your machine is, in-fact... starting up + the ability to get to utilities). It will be black until you get to the desktop. SO KEEP YOUR GT 120!!! Because if you ever need to get to the screens Grant spoke about (and you will... eventually ) you will need to swap your gt 120 back in to see the following:


"Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens".


I still have mine, and once or twice a year when I decide to screw something up royally, or my frigging' Cinema Display decides to shat the bed again (It's a common problem) to make me THINK my video card melted when in fact it's fine... I will swap the 120 back in to patch what I need to.



My opinion on the cards Grant mentions:


• 5770 / 5870 : 3+ years old now? In video card years this is very old due to the exponential jumps in tech. They are not worth the $, or the EFI boot screen. They are better cards out there for the $.


• nVidia Quadro cards (All of them) Absolutely not worth the $ unless you work @ NASA and are calculating the Mars Rover landing. These cards can render in AE as well... but are more expensive because they calculate math far more precisely. the 780 will render as fast if not faster than these for 1/4th the price. Get two and you'll 1/2 your render time. 🙂


• The 7050 looks like a good card (But I don't know much about ATI and if Adobe supports them for rendering / graphics card acceleration yet). The 680: At $600 this is overpriced. You can get a 780 for $100 less (but again, no EFI) with double the CUDA cores, and a higher Memory interface width and bandwidth. I could be wrong about this but as I recall, the 680 series was no faster than the 500 series (for rendering) due to the Memory interface width being lower in the 600 series (256 for the 680 Vs. 320 for the 570) despite having 3X the CUDA cores.



I'm running my reasonably priced 780 with additional PSU and it's working great. But I encourage you to do some more research and think about what is best for your given needs. I'll look for those links later today.

I have done a bunch of digging and if I needed to deal with either just After Effects or FCPX I think it would be an easier choice, but having to find the sweet spot between the 2 is a bit more complicated. However, it seems that the GTX 570 2.5GB is one of the choices. FCPX also will use the 5770, but it seems inferior to the Nvidia for AE. ..ugh...Like I said, at the moment it's more AE then FCP, but that could change. If you were having success with the GTX570 then maybe that's the way to go for now.


As far as the GTX 120, could you not leave both cards installed?...Then one monitor could show the boot screen while the other is dedicated to the more powerful card? Am I completely off here?


BTW, if I go with the GTX I would consider the one you were selling.

This is incorrect.


All you ever have to do is plug in the USB cable.


I just confirmed this on my Mac Pro.


I have a GTX760 in there right now and by plugging the USB in from 27" Apple Display I was able to access the Audio Out and Facetime camera.


I then daisy-chained my 24" Cinema Display into the 27" and was able to use THAT camera and/or speakers.


So all that is needed for people with a GPU that has a DisplayPort is the $8 Startech adapter and connecting the USB cable from the Cinema Display to their USB ports on computer.


Why spend an extra $120 for nothing?

Rick, you can infact have both cards installed and I am 99.27% sure that AE will use the CUDA enabled video card to render. I had not thought to mention that because my PCIE slots are full. Which brings me to another recomendation... You next upgrade should you choose to accept it is to get one... or even better yet, 2 of these to fill up empty PCIE slots:

I have a pair of 240GB PCIE SSD cards in my computer and it is rediculosly fast on read/write. Each card has two memory blades and a raid controller so they are configured in read/write in "Raid 0" - (Stripped) to double affective R/W time to 600mb/s. This is I belive about 7-8 ntimes faster than your average 7800 RPM drive. It is great for uncompressed video. Add another and use the Macs system to raid THOSE two cards together and you again double R/W speeds. Beside the video card this was the best upgrade I made.


I think the 680 SC might be the perfect card for your needs especially if your nervous about not having EFI boot, and need to have FCPX rendering capabilities. I'm assuming FCPX uses Open CL and not CUDA?


$500 still sounds a bit high for less performance though. Is that "Mac Tax" because your buying it through them? I would figure 680's would be cheaper by now. Maybe it's just the Mac version that is so $$$?


Let me know if you decide to go with my 570 and we can make arrangements. You could always get a 680 SC too and have them both curning our renders 🙂

All joking aside, can you post up a link here for the $8 StarTech adapter for others who may stumble upon this post, I couldn't seem to find it. All I could find ws this $110 one that doesn't run a 27" cinema display at it's full native resolution:

It only goes up to 1900x1200. What resolution are you running on your 27" Cinema display? If your not running it natively your missing out on a lot of pixels.


I seem to remember forking over the addtional $ for the Kanex http://www.kanexlive.com/c247dl because it ran native res. (2560x1600) when no one else's seemed to (Or at least I couldn't fins one at the time that did). I personally can't stand blurry up-scaled images on my highend Cinema Display. But I am an anal retentive pixel perfectionst designer. 😉
