High iOS 6 Data Usage? Turn off iCloud,

For those of you with unexplained excessive data usage, I've pinpointed the problem to a bug in iCloud. Unfortunately, turning off individual iCloud services will not solve the problem, you'll have to delete the iCloud account from the phone.

If the devices share an Apple ID content can be shared among them, including both apps and music. But they must be on the same Apple ID. You can even configure them to share automatically in settings, so content purchased on your computer or one device will automatically be pushed to the others. Sometimes this is not a good thing, however, so it can be turned off.

I was having the same problem with my Iphone 4s once I upgraded to IOS6 so I knew it had to be related because nothing else had changed.....I dont stream movies or music, there was no reason for an increase in data usage when I typically used less than 1 gb per month. So I called Verizon and after being transferred a few times, the right person told me that it is a known bug with IOS6 and that Verizon will NOT assess any data overage fees. They also advised me to reset my network settings to get the latest verizon settings which resolve the problem (settings-General-Reset-Reset Network Settings). This totally resolved my problem so I suggest verizon users do the same.

You can try these steps and hopefully this will help you too (mine is sorted now)


- back up the phone and restore it from iTunes (do not just erase all content on the phone then set up again), basically the aim is to re-install the software from iTunes

- reinstall all applications (i.e.: do not restore from a backup). Make sure you do not turn on push notifications and location services for apps unless absolutely necessary (i.e.: there is no reason for your Dictionary app to be sending you push notifications or for it to know where you are)

- turn off Siri (you can switch it on whenever you need to use it, as and when)

- turn off podcasts syncing

- VERY IMPORTANT: turn off automatic uploads for iTunes & App Store (regardless of whether these are set up to use your mobile data or not, just turn them off!) (go to: settings, iTunes & App Stores, then turn off ALL options: iTunes Match, Music, Apps and Use Mobile Data)

- turn off passbook updates (go to: settings, general, mobile data)



NOTE: the first time you set up the phone after the restore, connect to wi-fi first when you're setting up the phone and go to your email accounts to trigger downloading all your emails in the different folders. Once you're confident this mass download has stopped then you can go in and test the usage of mobile data.

Regrets that does not work albeit I am having a bit of nightmare restoring everything - problems with cloud calendars a function of being an old mobile me client (me.com, mac.com accounts). After doing all of the above it still leaks data so I have turned off mobile data; clearly there is a bigger issue that must be resolved. I must say that iOS 6 has not been a great experience for me, I would have been better sticking with 5.

Wow! I am glad to see my phone (4s) is not a problem. Last month my data go over 3GB (plus my 2GB plan). Even I am at home with wifi. The last 1GB over just hours before end of new cycle! I called AT&T and basically there is nothing they can do and give me the advice that I should turn off cellular data (which I rarely did). I though it is my fault. But within 1 week in new cycle, my phone ate up another 4GB! It freaks me out. I contacted with genius bar yesterday and he told me that Apple knew there is a bug that causes the problem and they are working on it. Apple probably releases the update next week.

So my question is who will help us on this? Apple or carrier (mine is AT&T). Thanks.

OK so there is a problem on different phone models, different countries and different carriers within countries. I tried to schedule a genius appoitment at my nearest Apple store and for two days now; it is not scheduling anything!! I tried support online but I have no free support. So how does one find out if Apple acknowledges a problem and is planning to fix it?

I spoke to my UK carrier O2 and with a bit of perserverence managed to speak to someone I felt could understand the issue. The carrier is not managing this as a general issue - I guess too few people have called with this. However, the technical person who called me asked that I download "my data manager" from the App store (free) and I can monitor and diagnose my usage of data. I read on the site of the app provider that analysis by app is not yet done for iOS6, but that is what the technical guy thought it would do. So I will monitor my use for a few days and hopefully by contacted again by O2 and we take it from there. I suspect that there has always been some use of cellular data but something in iOS6 has, for some, really bumped that up. I had one day with 27 MG of data by cellular when I did not download anything, was on a wifi network, 3G turned off etc. We need to find what is using the data by some objective diagnostic. Otherwise I suspect Apple and the carrier will believe it is the other party's software - at least no one is suggesting that it is my device. I had thought maybe the phone is diverting from wifi to the carrier's network inadvertently, but 27 MG in one day - that just does not make any sense, nothing I asked to be done could generate anything like that much. FYI 24 hours at home with my wifi on, I have used almost a MG of cellular data. But I can't trace it.

Well I got through to third level support with this, so I suspect there are those in Apple with a fuller picture.


I downloaded an app which prior to iOS6 gave you mobile data use by app (my data manager free on iTunes) but it will take some time before they can restore this for the new OS. But it does help track overall use.


I have had a further conversation with O2 and I got the feeling that there are a few who find this and they are certainly aware of it and looking in to it was the best I could get out of the call. I think that it is taking a month for iOS6 users to get their bills, if you are on big data plans than you migth not notice an extra 70-80 MG - so this issue takes some time. O2 will give me a bit more data whilst they investigate.


I am coming around to the view it is something to do with moving off a wifi network rather than being data specific; just doing a few chores out of the house I doubled my data use even though I did not perform any actions with the phone. Later this week I will be in environments where I go in and out of wifi networks and will track the usage
