Phone replaced, data problem still there. Apple store in Glasgow still don't seem to be aware of the problem.

I'm going to try a Vodafone SIM to see if they have the same problem.

I have been experiencing the same outrageous data consumption issue for about two months now. This also started after updating to iOS6. I am consuming twice or more data then our other iPhone which still is on 5. My boyfriend owns the other phone and he is disable and constantly at home on his phone gaming not on wifi and not coming anywhere near my data consumption. I have 6 like I said am on wifi at work and public places, always click to close apps, I almost never stream or update when Im not on wifi. I knew before today that it had to be 6 because my phone usage behaviors have not changed at all. I am in NY and have spent two months arguing with Verizon for my overage fees back which were $45/mo for 2 mo= $90. I have spent countless hours on the phone trying to resolve this issue. When I read this thread I called Verizon one last time to say hey either you comp me these fees or Im finding a new carrier. Finally they did and the tech new of this issue. Well its about **** time. He only wanted to credit me for one month but I said I have clearly been on you guys about this for 2 months its not like Im just calling saying this now about the last two months and its all in the notes for my account. Even though I was credited he did say that this would be it as far as credits and I would have to take this up with Apple now. Well last time I called Apple I waited 50 min on hold before I gave up. Who the **** has time for this?!? I was also told to turn off data when I could. I also went in and turned off alot of my push's and even retrieve my emails manually now. After reading this Im going to experiment with the ICloud and Google removal as well. I think all of this is bs because it shouldn't be our problem to fix this nor should we be charged for it or threatened to be! I should be able to use my phone the same way I always have without any changes to slow data use because something is wrong.

I've been struggling with this issue since iPhone5 / iOS 6, and Verizon's patch seems to have made it worse. So I called Verizon today. Their rep states (after forcing a straight answer) that Verizon's official position is that there is no issue - inspite of a THREE FOLD increase in data usage, and no change in my browsing habits. The only solution the rep could offer is to turn off cellular data - not really a solution at all because it degrades the functionality of the phone.

The folks on this theread are by and large technical types and we get that there's a problem, but how many non-technical consumers are getting blind-sided by data overage charges, and then bullied by their carriers into thininking that it's their fault??

My Question: When will this be acknowlwged as a problem by Apple and/or Verizon, ATT, et al and fixed?

Thanks for taking the time to help us with this issue. Mine had another issue in that cellular data was being used even though wifi was active, while the phone was in sleep mode. Another post showed me how to fix that by reassigning a different IP to my phone. With those two fixes, things seem to be on the right track again. My phone used 2 MB of data today in two hours though I didn't do anything on it with data. I almost went over my limit last month before I entirely shut down the Cellular Data connection until the monthly reset. Wow, this is a costly problem for many, many people. Thanks again jcenters!

I see from iClarified that iOS6.1 has been seeded to developers.

Hopefully 3G data problem will be fixed (assuming Apple sees it as a problem and not just "a function of iCloud on iOS6").

Now you know why apple would not put settings toggles in easy to access places like notifications bar.... it'd be so easy to quickly switch off/on cellular, gps, wifi etc..

but then how will the money flow...

Mysteriously I started having this problem on my iPhone 5 suddenly after the first month and a half of use. The first sign was the phone running hot and my battery getting drained by mid-afternoon. After the second day I got a txt message from Verizon stating that I'd burned through half of my 1Gb data plan. I went online and saw that for some reason my phone was downloading data 20 and 30 Mb at a time when just a few days previously it was 0.4 and 1.0 Mb. At first I turned off the data connection and that solved the battery problem. Then after finding this post I tried various changes. I turned off every possible data user... iCloud, Siri, Location Services, automatic downloads, Push Mail etc... with no difference. I reset the  network settings, then all settings with no luck. Finally I canceled my iCloud account (even though it was already off) and that did it. Now my data usage is back down to a sustainable level.

iCloud has been getting a lot of bad press of late and now I know why.

I've been haveing the same data issues since upgrading myiPhone4 to iOS6 but unfortunately only noticed when my phone notched up almost 200Mb of data when abroad.

Tried pretty much everything and finally got a result by turning of Safari sync in iCloud - now down to about 1Mb and hour rather than the 1Mb a minute that I had before

I also installed Onavo app which seems to be saving data and and My Data Manager that shows exactly what apps are using data and when (as far as apple will allow them to)

Now i just need to get on to O2 and try and repair the huge bill problem

Apple are going to have to be careful there are a lot of ****** of people out there and a lot of good Android phones in the shops

My son is having these same issues but he has a 4S and is only using iOS5.1. I've had him delete the iCloud and that slowed it considerably, now we are on to deleting Gmail accts and next will be resetting all settings and then a complete wipe. I have a iPhone 4 with iOS6.0.1 and have not noticed any data issues. In 2 weeks, I have used just over 30mb and hubs has used just under 50mb. The only thing that I have noticed are strange power drains on my battery at times.

I have noticed that my sons usage has gone up for no reason since November but now we are into overages. AT&T gave the response to turn off the cellular data, but that did nothing but make me angry. I don't want to turn it off, I want it fixed!

Verizon finally acknowledged my problem around Christmas after three months of excessive data usage from my line. They sent me a replacement phone which I restored from Itunes and have not put Icloud back on period. So far after a month it appears to be fixed.

  • Stephen Lang Level 1 (15 points)

I also found that turning off Safari sync in iCloud on my phone solved this problem for me.

This was a few months ago, and I haven't had problems with excessive data since (I'm on a 200MB/month plan). I haven't tried turning Safari sync back on to see if it was a bug, if it got fixed, etc.

Anyone know if iOS 6.1 corrected this issue?

  • Stan in London Level 1 (15 points)

No I don't but there is nothing in the release to suggest that Apple acknowledges this issue. I have "solved" my problem by turning off cellular data but of course that reduces the usefulness of the phone measurably. I have not looked into the thread for 6 weeks but see that more and more people are having this issue. There is a myriad of possible fixes that fail to coelesce around anything really compelling. I have wiped the phone, turned off this and that.... but to no avail. I have spent time online with Apple high level, even sending them by phone data, but it cannot find anything out of the ordinary. I would welcome anyone who has installed the latest OS to advise this forum on their experience re data leakage.

  • Gracey76 Level 1 (0 points)

My friend updated hers to ios 6.1 and it hasn't fixed the cellular usage leak while connected to wifi.  I'm too scared to update !!!

  • sarafromhalifax Level 1 (0 points)

Well, my data issues seem to have disappeared. Now back to more normal usage (was using 4 times as much) since I got iOS 6. I have not yet installed iOS 6.1. I have done app updates a few times so wonder if it was caused by faulty app(s)?
