Why do I keep getting 923-0 messages when trying to text?

I just got my new iphone 5 from Sprint. They transfered all of my info from my previous phone, mostly just my contacts to my new iphone. When trying to text certain people I keep getting this 923-0 error message "Message sent using invalid number of digits. Please resend using 10 digit number or valid short code. Msg 2114." They never receive my text and I keep getting this message. So I tried changing the numbers so they had the area code to fulfull the 10 digit number request, doesn't work. I've deleted the contact completely and entered them in again with area code included, doesn't work. I've gone back into the Sprint store and tried to get them to fix it and they said they can't and that I need to contact apple support. I can't figure out what is going on and why this seems so hard to fix something so easy as a number to text to. iphones to iphones work just fine with the imessage app, but not to other phones. This is driving me crazy. Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

Yes. That is what I'm saying.

I'm saying that the contacts -- by either being transferred from another device or by being entered in incorrectly in some other manner - were not 10 digits. Or there are various other legitimate ways the issue can occur (a text block placed on the phone by carrier, or texting a number that doesn't exist.. and possibly other ways as well).

One of the handy things about smart phones is they can reference a number and connect it with entire histories for that given number... - it's meant to do that. Issue is.. If I put in a contact, either by hand - or by transferring it from another phone / sim card and this is an improper number -- and then I send a few texts.. or receive some calls from that contact - etc, now I have more than just a contact to clean up - I have a history that references this. It's not a bug.. it's a feature of a phone remembering what we tell it and making connections.

Also.. I study lots of phone issues -- I'd like to note, this is not a common issue at all. People think issues are common simply because you find it on the internet and there are a handful of other people experiencing it - as I stated there are hundreds of millions of devices out there.. and it's not limited to one brand or even one carrier - and there are few results for this problem.

It's not a bug.. delete all references to the contact and re-enter it and it should work. It's like saying that you entered your wifi password.. and it remembered it.. and then you try to connect to wifi and it won't.. it isn't a bug when a phone does what we told it to do.

I have tried EVERYTHING. I deleted the contact, all of their texts/calls. I deleted all of my apps. I backed everything up on iCloud and then did General>Reset>Erase all Content and Settings. Once my phone was completely reset, I could successfully send that person a text. However, as soon after I restored my settings via iCloud, I was back to the error message. I sent over 2 hours on the phone with 3 different Sprint representatives. Although they all had good intentions, none of them knew what to do. My iPhone 5 is literally just 30 days old, and when I had my iPhone 3GS with T-Mobile I NEVER had this problem. I am so frustrated and have NO idea what to do.

You can restore the phone as new, and just sync whatever content you want on it. If you just want music, sync music, if you just want contacts from iCloud, just switch on contacts in iCloud. That should take care of what you want to do. Remember, restoring as a new device deletes everything on the device. It will be like it was when to took it out of the box, so determine what you want on it and then just put that on there.

this worked for me. simple and easy to do. i have iPhone 4S (sprint)

deleted messages from/to that number

deleted error messages

deleted contact

turned off all messaging (Settings > Messages > Send as SMS (off), MMS Messaging (off), Group Messaging (off)

reset network settings (Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings (yes)

the reset network settings will erase wifi passwords.

i'm actually not sure if it works yet cuz the person hasn't replied.. but after doing this i messaged the number and haven't gotten an error code yet (it's been about half an hour). hope this helps! props to the OP.

I have an Iphone 5 and experiencing the same error msg 2114. Carrier is Sprint. I have have this issue with 4 friends that have blackberries. They can text me but I can't text them. Sprint engineers are looking into this. My husband and 2 sons have iphone 5's bought at the same time at a Sprint store. They do not experience the same error message, just my phone. I have tried every suggestion I can find on the web. The sprint tech has exhausted their options to resolve this issue. Now I am waiitng for the sprint engineers to get back to me. For the cost of the phone and monthly service cost I am ready to tell Sprint to exhange my iphone. This should not be happening. If anyone has another solution or has had this issue resolved pls post a response. Thanks

This worked for me too. I had been working with my carrier for over a month.

"Here is what u need to do I had the same thing happen to me clear that contact out of your phone that means all of the text messages from that number and all of the messages from the error code then go to your setting for your messing and turn them all off then shut your phone down. What for 2 or so min. Turn it back on and go back to your setting and turn them all back on then type the phone # in make sure you use the area code for the 10 didgets (555)555-5555 then try texting that person this should work it worked for me"

Why do I keep getting 923-0 messages when trying to text?
