Adobe Photoshop 7.0

I just installed Adobe Phtoshop 7.0 onto my computer, and within 30 minutes of using it, several problems occurred on my computer. So far, what I noticed to have happened was my trash bin having been suddenly emptied out, everything coming off of my desktop including my wallpaper except for the Mac HD icon, all of my setting having been reset, my bookmarks being have been deleted, some icons now have a blue folder icon rather than their original pictures, and my picture icons no longer show up as pictures but rather as a plain jpeg icon. Other than this, many of my files seem to still be there. Is there anything I can do to restore what has been lost?

Depending upon how recently you backed up. I've never heard of this happening because of Photoshop being installed, however, version 7 was made long before system 10.4x, so it might have a compatibility issue. Photoshop is up to version 9, which is compatible with 10.4x. Version 8 (CS) was created while 10.2x was being released, so I think version 7 may have been released with the original System 10.

I suggest you uninstall it, - and hopefully you backed up recently - and upgrade to CS or CS 2.

Blozan1 read below:
Most likely the problem with Photoshop 7 and 10.4.6. I didn't copy and paste the entire article, but rather the relevant parts. This is a cause of Photoshop 7 crashing (as well as CS and CS 2) but several people also reported similar issues to yours.

http://www.helios.de/support/ti.phtml?099

Also, read below from Group Logic:

Group Logic has determined the cause of the Photoshop crash that occurs
when saving file to an AFP server from a Mac OS X 10.4.6 client.
Photoshop appears to be using an older Carbon call that creates and
retrieves Mac OS 9 comments instead of the Mac OS X comments stored in
the .DS_Store file. Mac OS X 10.4.6 changes how those older comments are
handled which triggers a crash in Photoshop.
Details:
The following is a summary of the actions which cause Photoshop to
crash:
Copy a Photoshop file with no comments to the server
Open it in Photoshop
Save it in Photoshop

Photoshop will request the OS 9 comments from the server
Server returns "no comments" because they don't exist
Photoshop writes comments to the server, usually over 128 or 200
characters (depends on what file format is used)

Resave the file in Photoshop

Photoshop will request the OS 9 comments from the server
Mac OS X Server returns "no comments" whereas ExtremeZ-IP, SFM, Helios
and Mac OS 9 return the actual comments
Save completes to the Mac OS X Server or crashes on all other AFP
Servers.

The AFP 3.1 specification supports comments of up to 199 characters. In
addition we found that AFP 2.2 in Mac OS 9 personal file sharing allows
comments of up to 199 characters. However servers running Mac OS X 10.3
and 10.4 do not permit comments over 128 characters (this may be true in
earlier versions of Mac OS X, but we did not test them).

These are the facts we were able to determine via packet traces and
standard testing:
1. If a client wants tries to add an OS 9 comment that is greater than
128 characters to a file on a Mac OS X 10.4 AFP server, the server will
return success but not modify the existing comment. The server simply
ignores the request.
2. Photoshop will not crash if an AFP server returns OS 9 comments
that are less than 128 characters

From this evidence we have come to the conclusion that Photoshop
incorrectly assumes that OS 9 comments cannot be larger than 128
characters. Since the 10.4.6 upgrade it appears that the OS X client
will correctly return to Photoshop the entire 199 characters of the Mac
OS 9 comment. Since ExtremeZ-IP and most other AFP servers conform to
the AFP spec they do send the full 199 characters allowed. Upon
receiving the comment from the AFP server, the Mac OS X 10.4.6 AFP
client will pass the comment to the Carbon File Manager, and it in turn
to Photoshop which will then crash.

This is not seen when saving to the XServe, because it never creates
comments if they exceed 128 characters. Therefore the change to the AFP
client in Mac OS X 10.4.6 would not affect Photoshop when saving to an
Xserve.

Apparently there are issues with 10.4.6 and Photoshop!

Sorry MAC JACK!

Colin, the problem the Helios people are addressing is the now notorious one where ALL versions of Photoshop running in OS X crash when attempting to save to a server other than an Xserve. Has nothing to do with using Photoshop 7 on your non-server connected Mac, and the problem does not have the results described by the original poster. Like MacJack I suspect the problem has something to do with renaming the home folder. Somehow the OP has gotten a default home folder rather than his original.

I'm sorry, but I didn't see in his post that he has a non-server connected MAC. I didn't link the i-book at the bottom - my bad!

What I did see was Photoshop 7, OS 10.4.6 and I was attempting to find a connection and inform him of them. My apologies if I led anyone astray. As I said in my first post, I've never seen Photoshop do anything along these lines.

I'm running PS7 on three separate macs ...

A G4 733 DA PowerMac and Mac OS X.4.6 Once I upgraded to the latest OSX.4.6 I immediately began to have a number of issues w/ PS7 crashing or simply stalling upon being launched. So I downloaded the 7.0.1 updater from adobe's site and now all is well again. Seems to have resolved the issue on this one mac.

The other two macs are still running Panther & PS 7.0 w/o any issues whatsoever.

Here we go again..... Now PS 7.0.1 stalls out as it attempts to access adobe online support and updates. This is on the G4 733 running OS X.4.6 But if i disconnect the ethernet cable from the internet (so that it doesn't communicate with adobe's web site) ..... all is fine and the app launches as expected.

Anyone else having this issue with regards to abobe's online support files upon launching this app?

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Yes that is a known stupidity on old versions of Photoshop and Elements. They have a default set to check with Adobe and if the Adobe servers are acting up (which they seem to do with some regularity) the programs won't launch. The solution is to set the preference to NEVER check. There aren't any more updates for PS7 or Elements 1 or 2 anyway. Don't remember precisely where the preference is, but poke around the the Photoshop menu and you'll find it.

Thank you for the speedy reply. Updates is directly under the "Help Menu" right under System Info. However, I'm in a Catch 22 situation in that if I click on updates from the drop down Help Menu I get the spinning beachball effect while the computer attempts to access the abobe online support file (which worked fine before or immediately after the update to 7.0.1). You wisely pointed out that there are no further updates for PS7. And if I disconnect the ethernet cable altogether, then I get the following message:

"an error occurred while attempting to download a file from the abobe web server" ......

Error code 18:-23015

Any other suggestions?

I think I found the solution:

You can set Adobe Online preferences by choosing Edit > Preferences > Adobe Online (Windows and Mac OS 9) or Photoshop > Preferences > Adobe Online (Mac OS X).

Of course in order to launch the app in the first place one must first disconnect the ethernet cable (assuming PS7.0.1 is currently stalling out upon launch due to adobe's web servers). Once the app is up and running (no thanx to adobe's servers), then it's possible to address the above preferences by setting adobe online updates to "NEVER".

Hope others who may experience this same issue with adobe's web server find the above info helpful.
