If anyone is still having trouble with a similar problem this is what fixed my issue with not being able to back up. I have an iphone5.

It sounds stupid, and I can't believe I didn't realize it before but my iphone wasn't properly connecting to my home network after one of the updates. I always thought I was using the wifi because when I looked under settings my network was listed to the right of wi-fi.Apparantly it was trying to connect over and over again but never had a solid connection. Not sure what happened, but this is what fixed it.

Go to settings>Wi-Fi>click on your network, then select "Forget this Network"

>then click back to the wifi network list and select "Other" and manually enter your Network name exactly as it appears (Ex: 2WIRE633) and select the type of security you have on it. (Ex: WPA2Personal)

Next see if you get a check mark next to your network and try to Backup to icloud again.

Hope I'm the only one that didn't notice the wifi issue prior to trying everything else listed throughout this thread.

Nope. The continul problem -- though not a major problem -- is that the iPhone 5 running iOS 6.1 will not automatically backup to iCloud "when this iPhone is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi." It manually backs up both to iCloud and on the computer, there just is no automatic backup that ever occurs: The only time and date given for iCloud backup is that of my last manual backup.

Late to this party....I have an Iphone 5 purchased late December and activated early January...up until January 31st it was backing-up automatically when plugged in and locked and connected to wifi....we went on vacation out of country on that date so my phone was not backed-up since I did not have access to wifi in my room. I received the 'Has not been backed up message since January 31st' message but I didn't pay it any mind since we were out of country. Since returning on the 15th I have connected my phone overnight for charging when needed and assumed that it was backing up until last week when I received another message that it had not been backed-up.I could back it up by choosing to do so manually over wifi but it would still not do it automatically.

I also have an IPad with the same OS 6.1 and it backs up automatically - no problem. I spoke to Apple and unfortunately this particular rep was not very helpful in understanding what I was explaining nor working towards a solution. The best he came up with was that ICloud will not back-up every day and if there is nothing new to back-up it will not back-up....while on some level I kind of get what he is saying I don't know why it wouldn't at least come back with a message saying as much...similar to what software update does when it searches and then tells you you have the latest updates.

Someone mentioned emptying your camera roll. While mine was downloaded into IPhoto it kept the photos (all1500) on my phone under Albums> Cameraroll. This may be part of my problem with automatic BU yet it does not explain why it will BU manually....BTW my storage plan says I have 7.9 GB available - my IPhone and IPad share the storage plan.

For now I will watch it and BU manually and if it continues I guess I'll call Apple again and hopefully get someone different. I will also make certain I have a hard copy of my 1500 photos and then delete them from my phone's camera roll.

I updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 6 in October 2012- from that day onwards I was unable to backup to my icloud. I have tried all the previous suggestions and nothing worked - called apple and no one could help. Yesturday I went into settings>privacy>photos > and switched all the buttons to off. Basically I stopped all the apps that had acess to my photos then slowly one by one turned them on till I found the culprit app. NOW MY PHONE IS BACKING UP TO ICLOUD .

All of this thread is really old, but there is not another more recent thread.

I have 8.1.3 on my iPhone 4S. It has not backup since November. ITunes is not an option. I bought extra cloud storage. Your instructions do not help since there IS NO "Backup Now" under iCloud to tap. There is "storage" and then "Manage storage" but never a "Backup Now" button or link to start a backup. I have nearly 25GB of storage available in iCloud. My iPad works just fine. I have powered off the iPhone. I have even deleted the last backup as suggested. Please DO NOT tell me to do the simple things like "Is WIFI connected" Both my idevices are using my WIFI just fine. The iPhone is locked and charged every night while connected to WIFI. Where is the stupid manual "Backup Now" button?

Don't go into Manage Storage. Go into Settings, iCloud, then scroll down to Backup (just above Keychain). Go into Backup and the Back Up Now link is on that page.

However, this still doesn't fix the problem for those of us who haven't been able to back up for a while. When managing storage, it asks to confirm that I want this app and its data erased from iCloud. No, I don't want all data to disappear permanently. How does one get around that? And why hasn't anyone from Apple posted an update about fixing this flaw?? I have an iPhone 5 and my husband has the 6. He's not having this problem.

I've tried this multiple times ... even with the manual backup, the backup won't complete. It grinds on for an hour or more, then gives me an error message -- something like Backup could not be completed. I have upped my iCloud capacity, made sure that the wifi is working ... I can't understand why it SAYS it's working and then just quits.

I need to install a new operating system OR get me a new phone, but I can't do either until I can successfully back this phone up. AAARGH! It hasn't been able to back up for more than a month. Before then, it was doing it flawlessly, automatically and I never had to worry about it. Help!!!!
