Mail not using the correct account to reply to email

I use Gmail to fetch email from my other email accounts. Prior to Mountain Lion, whenever I replied to an email, Mail would use the correct email account to reply to. That is to say, Gmail was fetching email from abc@mail.com, for example. When I click reply, the default account would be mail.com. But since upgrading to Mountain Lion, the default account will be Gmail.com.

Has anyone experienced this? How were you able to solve this, if at all?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Similar problem with two gmail accounts and sending from wrong one even with 10.8.3. When you say you delete the outgoing server - each of the two accounts has gmail as outgoing server did you delete both gmail outgoing servers or only the one - on the account which was adding its email address to everyhthng or the one which was not getting the correct email address?

Thanks

I had this issue and found this solution online.... This seems to work!

Go into preferences and check the outgoing mail server for the address that you've having issues with. It will be shown as offline. Put a checkmark next to it where it says use only this server only. It will ask you to confirm the password for this account and take it back online.

I actually had a similar problem - only it was my wife's email that was getting targetted!

I had both our personal Gmail accounts on Apple Mail, and it became such a problem that I removed her gmail account from the accounts pane in settings and in Mail preferences. But my recipients were STILL receiving email from HER address, and sending them back to hers as well!

checking out this supposed solution, because it's driving everyone nuts.

I was getting the same problem and I went into Mail>Preferences, selected myfirst account, Outgoing Mail server, drop down menu> Edit SMTP Server List>advanced and didn't notice that I had the wrong username in one of my accounts. For example My work gmail was 12345@company.com and I had only 12345. That forced the Mail App to select my alternative (personal) account to send my e-mails.

I have this for my personal account:

Description: Gmail

email adress: example@gmail.com

Full Name: Example Man

Incoming Mail server: imap.gmail.com

user name: example //this is just because my personal account is @gmail.com thats why I only need to put the text before the "@".

password: yourpassword

The same for the outgoing mail server. Check that you have your credentials correctly written.

THIS ONE WAS THE CORRECT ANSWER - IT HELPED RESOLVE A NEARLY UNSOLVEABLE PROBLEM.

All of my Credentials were correct yet still emails were appearing without the correct email address. The following remedies the situation...

ℹ Go To:

Mail > Preferences > Account > SELECT 'Outgoing Mail Server SMTP' > then SELECT 'Edit SMTP Server list' > then Click ADVANCED [SELECT your AUTHENTICATION], INPUT the Mailbox User Name you wish to appear on email communications (I added my Domain email address) / then INPUT your Mailbox PASSWORD > Click OK >>> Now the issue is solved (Emails now show the Correct Address).

I'm using Yosemite on a new MacBook (and last OS X I was running was stuck at Lion).

I use three gmail accounts and I had to add a separate SMTP entry in the SMTP list for each gmail account, since authentication must be enabled for gmail SMTP server entry (I tried without and it failed). Once each gmail account uses the corresponding SMTP server whose authentication matches the gmail account user name & p/w, then the emails sent from those gmail accounts in the OS X Mail client are received from the expected account.

It seems that sender's email address is set to match the account used for SMTP authentication (possibly enforced by gmail's servers), so it all needs to match up and then works like you want.

This helped me solve my problem... now it's working! Thanks much!

It seems that something happened and the outgoing server was taken offline so the mail client has been using other outgoing servers from other accounts to send your messages which is why the replies were going to the wrong place.

Now that it's using the correct server and you're forcing it to use it, it should work just fine! "

Thanks @ m_Three

Many thanks for your solution, which was exactly the right one for me. After moving a message from Account B to main account A, Mail then sent all my messages from B despite showing in the outgoing message that it was being sent from A!! Thanks to your suggestion, I dug a little deeper in the advanced accounts preferences and discovered that despite having deleted account B, it still showed as the default account. I appreciate, as always, the time that users take to address the issues of others and offer help.
