Iphone 5 Wifi keeps disconnecting whilst on lock.

I recently bought my iphone 5 and managed to hook it up to my router pretty easily, get good connection and internet speed but when ever I lock my iphone and put it in my pocket or on my desk for more than 30 seconds the wifi drops off. I then have to go back into settings and manually reconnect my iphone in order to use the wifi.

I have fiddled about with some of the settings and found that when i turn mobile data and 3g off this problem doesnt happen anymore which is odd. Further to this my family members also have iphone 5's yet their connections do not drop out whilst on hold.

Has anyone else had this problem or found a solution?

I was having a similar problem at work and seeing as how my basement office gets no cell reception at all, it got pretty annoying very quickly! Hopefully you've found a break-fix, if not I discovered this after noodling around.

I went into the Wifi network itself (Settings>Wifi>Network Name> and turned on Auto-Join.

Now, when I wake my phone (5, iOS 6.1.4) the wifi antenna turns on and automatically connects to my employer's network without having to re-authenticate through their "Welcome to our wireless" screen.

Haven't had any problems since.

Has anyone come up with a solution to this yet or is it a problem with the iphone 5?

There seems to be a lot of different problems posted on here with different solutions, but I have read the whole thread and no one seems to have posted a solution to the original problem (which is similar to mine) which is that the phone keeps disconnecting from wifi when in sleep/lock mode.

As soon as I wake it up it connects to the wifi again, but why does it keep dropping it when it is locked?

This is really anoying as I dont use 3g and so I dont receive any whatsapp messages, iMessages or facebook message or notifications unless I check my phone (wake it up).

It is not a problem with the wifi/router as it happens at home and at work, and both were working fine on my old iphone and with everyone elses iphones.

Does anyone know if there is a fix for this?

I just resolved my issue, and I hope that this helps everyone else with the same problem. What I discovered using Netgear tech support is that while I'm at home I have to turn off Cellular (settings, general, cellular). Apparently the cellular carrier competes with the wifi.

My husband has ATT on his work iphone 4s and 3rd generation ipad. He's never had any issues with either and leaves his cellular on. I have Verizon on a second generation ipad and iphone 5, problems with both, but mostly the iphone 5. The Verizon LTE4 is competing with the wireless 5G router, in my instance. Once I turned off cellular in settings the issue went away. It's a minor nag to have to turn it on when I leave home and turn it off when I get back, but honestly, I use it mostly at home. I'm just happy to finally know what the issue is and how to resolve it. I hope this works for you as well!

I fixed my iPhone5 and 5S wifi connection problem by giving different SSID in my Dual Band router.

My router support Dual Band:

2.4GHz (802.11b/g/n) and 5GHz (802.11a/n)

I encounter connection lost very often when I was using a same Wireless Network Name SSID for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. For example, both band using SSID : Home Network

The connection problem solved after I gave different Wireless Network Name SSID in 2.4GHz and 5GHz band.

For example, 2.4GHz using SSID: Home Network 2.4GHz

5GHz using SSID: Home Network 5GHz

Then I let my iPhone5 and 5S join both wifi network "Home Network 2.4GHz" and "Home Network 5GHz".

Wifi Connection become stable now.

Hope this help other people whom had same problem.

I’m running IOS 7.0.4 and it very definitely is NOT fixed. I was about to start a discussion about this but found this thread first.

I suspected this was what was running up my data usage charges since changing to this device. I have only a few applications that do background polling and rarely stream anything over cellular data.

I turned off cellular data while home just to check, and sure enough it prompts me to turn it back on when running any internet-enabled application, even though WiFi is supposed to be connected and working.

This also explains why when I’m on a phone call where I have WiFi service available and enabled, all email and internet is blocked until I hang up, unless if I plug in for power in advance (if I can). iPhone would NOT engage WiFi automatically. I forced the connect attempt during the call. Luckily it was a conference call where I had the time to do that. Most of the time, though, I don't. That’s DEFINITELY broken.

WRONG answer. And I DID read this message thread.

When this device is set to poll for mail on a schedule, or receive push notifications, it MUST connect. Don’t care what the power source is. Don't care if it's locked or not. My Blackberry does this very well, locked or unlocked, battery power or tethered.

There’s NO indication within this device that all internet-enabled applications are NOT working on battery power without cellular data present. For those of us who routinely spend some time within environments where there’s only WiFi present, and poor or no cellular data service available, this is NOT acceptable.

I just bought the IPhone 5S, having the same issues. I've been on the phone with Apple, they seem to be clueless about this widespread issue, AT&T doesn't know what the problem is...

I've tried everything, even reset all of my settings. NOTHING is working to keep me connected.

It connected off and on for a few days then quit.

It keeps saying "incorrect password" when I enter the password. It is NOT incorrect.

All of my other devices have no problem staying connected to wi-fi.

My husband also got the same phone a week ago, his has the SAME issue.

Yes, phones are updated with latest software.

I am so frustrated, I don't have time to deal with this.

I'm returning both phones.
