command-shift-3 is a screen shot. command-shift-4 give you a selection rectangle for a selective shot.

Or you use the Grab application, found in the Utilities folder.
I had the same question. The above replies solved it. But, now i have another pertaining to the same thing. I know, on my iPhone, it is aved to "Camera Roll," but, on MacBook, where is it saved to?

And in Grab, you have to save the image using the standard save file dialog to wherever you want.
Take a picture of the whole screen | Command (⌘)-Shift-3 |

Continue to press the mouse button, release the keys, and then press Shift, Option, or the Space bar while you drag to resize the selection area. go to iphoto and look at camera roll or photo stream but photo streaming needs to be activated on both iphone and iphoto if its not active you need to back up your photos to iphoto
So many things you can do. You got some of the Mac tricks with your post. A good book on Macs and Mac OS X will turn you on to the rest. Stop down to your local bookstore. Periodically read Macworld. Good web site:
1. Use Command+Shift+3 to capture the whole screen (Make sure you press all the 3keys simultaneously)
2. Use Command+Shift+4, and then select a portion of the screen to capture a part of the screen (Make sure you press all the 3 keys simultaneously)
The screenshots will be placed straight onto the desktop.
