"iCloud Backup" message won't go away & locks the screen.

My ipad has a box that pops up and says "iCloud Backup This ipad has not been backed up for 2 weeks. Backups happen when this ipad is plugged in,locked and connected to Wi-Fi." I repeatedly hit the OK button, but the box still remains. I can't get into any other screen. Please help! Your advice is much appreciated.

Try a reset:



1. Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together) for about 10 seconds



2. Until you see the Apple logo (very important)

You can uncross your fingers. Nobody here works for Apple. We are just other users like you, trying to help each other with technical issues. Apple does not monitor this forum for user issues, they only monitor for abuse and appropriate behavior in the ASC.


What causes the issue ..... I am going to go out on a limb and say that nobody here will be able to answer that question. I understand why you get the message - that is obvious - but why the screen locks up doesn't make sense to me.


The best "fix" is to make sure that you backup on a regular basis as you should - and this way you will not get that message.

Thank you, Dianovix, indeed this short-term workaround solution did work.


Now, are some bigger questions I'd like to ask Apple. (I'm hoping they monitor this forum.)

  1. What caused the problem?
  2. Should we expect for this issue to happen again, and if so, what is being done about it?
  3. When will we see a long-term solution to this workaround?


I'm crossing my fingers in hopes Apple will see these questions.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. my ipad has been totally disabled for over a week due to this icloud problem. Some of the convoluted, complicated, advice I got was useless. I have turned off the "reminders" in the icloud app hoping that I can avoid this happening again. Your simple fix took 20 seconds, and my ipad is back in action!

I've been dealing with this issue as well, it's happening multiple times per week. Resetting the device works to temporarily resolve the issue. However, a dialogue box that locks up a device is a bigger issue than resetting or backing up,... For a problem that's almost a year old, I expect a tech giant like Apple to clean up their UX on an expensive device that updates regularly.

OK, I got the same message on my iphone about no icloud back-up for two weeks. However, my iphone did not lock up. I clicked OK and easily went to the screen of choice. But---here is my question and it is from a obviously non-tech, basic user of the phone and email. What do I do to make sure everything is backed up? My phone is "plugged in" every night (although the warning references the ipad being plugged in). My wi-fi is on. I have no idea about it being "locked." How do I do this and what does it do beyond enabling back-up? Is there something I should be doing periodically to make sure my stuff is backed up? I thought this happened automatically. Thank you all.

I have gotten the message on my iPad as well, I have always been able to tap OK and not have the iPad lock up on me either.


"Locked" means when the iPad or iPhone is asleep. When you tap the sleep/power button you can put the device to sleep. When the iPad is set to backup automatically with iCloud, it should be plugged into power, asleep (locked) and connected to WiFi. I can not say that I have ever seen this occur, but that's because I never sync or backup automatically and never have. I so sync over WiFi and backup with iTunes. I backup with iCloud as well, but I always initiate the backup on my own.


Your device must be configured to backup or sync automatically in the settings.


For iCloud backups - Settings>iCloud>Storage and backup>iCloud Backup>On. I always turn it on when I am ready to backup, I backup and then turn it off so that I can sync and backup with iTunes on my Mac.


For WiFi sync - Settings>General>iTunes WiFi Sync. Your computer must be turned on and iTunes must be running as well in order to sync over WiFi, and you have to select Sync this iPad over WiFi in the iTunes Summary sync options.


If you want to more sure that you are backed up you can initiate an iCloud backup in the settings like I described above. Just tap on Backup Now after you get into the iCloud backup settings on the iPad.

I have this too. To answer most of the questions coming from those who don't have it: the dialog pops over everything else. The interface isn't frozen (you can still activate siri, background animations work, etc), however it's modal, so nothing can be clicked on underneath it.


The dialog box has a single ok button, but the button fails to dismiss the dialog (whoever designed it must have forgotten to wire the behavior in).

This worked perfectly for my wife! thank you so much. However it is not just the iCloud backup message that causes this. She loses her iphone around the house a lot and locates it using the "Find my iPhone" app on her iPad mini. The message popped up saying "iphone has been found" with the OK button. Then it completely locked.

Okay so I had the same problem, I sync it with my computer on a regular basis (and I still get the message all the time). I do not use iCloud back up for anything other than my safari bookmarks and my phone does not do it ever, just my mini iPad... I was looking for a way to disable the notification and when I didn't find a way in the notification center I looked under the iCloud section... And I found away to shut it off if you do not want it to "automatically back up all of your stuff to iCloud when it's plugged in, locked and connected" yada yada annoying pop up box/notification. Settings -> iCloud -> storage & back up -> switch off iCloud back up. I did that and it seems to have stopped... However if you want stuff to automatically update to iCloud because you use it to back up everything then you are just gonna have to plug it in, lock it, and make sure it's connected to wifi to get the notification to go away until the next time it wants to becoming annoying and make you to back it up.

I have this issue going on with my iPad. It asks for my password. I enter it and it doesn't recognize it. I checked on the appleid.apple site to make sure it was right and it is. What gives? I've done the reset suggested here twice and made sure to hold it for 10+ seconds until I get the apple icon.


Any suggestions would be great!
