internal speaker output device missing

Hi,
I can't find a way to get the "internal speaker" option appears in the sound output device list in the system preferences/sound/output, the only option is "digital output".
Because of that, I can only have sound through headphones.
I'm trying to avoid backup and reinstall, it's kind of a pain to reconfigure every things...
So if anybody have an info about that it would be really helpful.
Thanks,
Charles.

Do you have a device plugged in the audio jack ?

Brilliant idea. After a few seconds of gentle poking around, the light went off and sound returned. It seems the microswitch collects dust (just like the rest of the machine) and that was causing mine to stick. When I pulled the toothpick out, it had a little dark, sticky dust on the end of it.
Kudos to whoever brought that info to the thread.

me too...
first time around, it worked after re-booting the system, but it came back..
so I have (for the past 5 minute or longer) tried the head phone trick, since I couldn't find a toothpick. 😟
IT works!

anyhow, I realized that when people mention the 6 o'clock, 12 o'clock directions, it means not towards you and towards the front of you, but more so downwards and upwards.. am I right? I think for me, when I tried to wiggle the headphone jack up and down(rather than front and back) it worked..

I can confirm that plugging your mini jack headphones in and out a couple of times fixed the problem here on a fairly new MacBook.

When this happened to me, I was using a pair of Sony headphones and I have to say that they don't fit as smoothly as the apple earbuds. Maybe this is just caused by a bad fit of non-apple mini jacks.
