This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.

In my Airport Utility a read the following message:

"

I assume that your MacBook Pro is running OS X Mountain Lion ... correct? If so, version 5.6 can run just fine on this version of OS X; it just can't be installed in the traditional way.

Here are the basic steps to install version 5.6 under Mountain Lion using CharlesSoft's Pacifist:

  1. If you haven't already download the AirPort Utility disk image file directly from Apple Support Download
  2. Place the resultant AirPortUtility56.dmg file onto your Mac's Desktop.
  3. Run Pacifist.
  4. Click on the Open Package option. Find the disk image file that you just placed on your desktop, and then, click on Open.
  5. The utility is located as follows: Contents of AirPortUtility56.dmg > Contents of AirPortUtility56.pkg > Contents of AirPortUtility56Lion.pkg > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6.app
  6. Drag AirPort Utility 5.6.app to your Mac's /Applications/Utilities folder.

You can now run the AirPort Utility from the Utilities folder.

Mavericks users: Thanks to Corey Mahler, there is a solution for getting AirPort Utility 5.6.1 to run on Mavericks, and it doesn't require uninstalling the new version (so you can keep using the new utility for newer Airports). Just google “corey mahler 5.6.1 mavericks” and you’ll find it. (I tried to post a link here, but it kept getting removed).

I've tried this with Mavericks 10.9.4 and it works. Once you've installed Airport utility 5.6.1 and the launcher app, you will need to run Airport 5.6.1 Launcher app, and that will get the utility running.

It worked, thanks Yambu1!! (and THANKS Corey Mahler!!)

I bought an older airport used for $20 and didn't realize that the current airport utility wouldn't work for me. I used Corey Mahler's solution and it worked like a charm. I was hesitant, but found articles on both macworld.com and macupdate.com so I figured it was safe to use. I even signed up to the discussion board just to post a positive review.

Just found this discussion and used the method described. It works! Under Mavericks I was able to get an old Apple Express (802.11 b/g only) working again to extend the wireless coverage from an old Apple Extreme base station. As expected, the Express can not be configured to 'Extend wireless network'. It can only be configured as 'Participate in a WDS network', meaning it is limited to b/g speed of 2.4 GHz. However, since I'm currently still using an old Apple Extreme base station, I am limited to 2.4 GHz anyway. Thanks hugely to Yambu1 and Corey Mahler.

This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.
