Ethernet link speed only 10 Mbit/s wifi speed is 60+

I'm connected to my universities network. For wifi, I usually get speeds in excess of 60 mbit/s. When I'm connected to ethernet (wifi is spotty sometimes) it's super slow. I only get 9 mbit/s for down and up. Meanwhile, my roommates computer gets the same speeds on both ethernet and wifi (using the same cable that I'm using)

I have a late 2009 macbook pro with the NVIDIA model # MCP79-1

you are welcome.

If link speed within safe mode is higher (100 Mbit/s or 1 Gbit/s) then you likely have some kernel extension installed, which for whatever reason significantly slows down the network stack.

If link speed remains at 10 Mbit/s, do a hardware test by pressing D when restarting. If any errors are detected, take your MacBookPro to an Apple Store or an Apple reseller for a thorough hardware diagnosis.

If hardware test shows no errors, reinstalling OSX from scratch is called for.

Reinstalled OSX (10.8.2) Still doing the same thing. I should also add that I have an apple Tv plugged in (there are 2 ethernet jacks per room) It streams really quickly. I've tried plugging it in with the Apple Tv's cable. Still really slow

My school's IT department is coming out in about an hour, so we'll see what they have to say
