Erasing and re-installing Leopard before upgrading

I'd like to re-install my Leopard system using the CD of Installation to clean up the whole machine and leave it the way it left the Factory. Then I'd have to take from my time machine all my files. The simplest way is just transferring the user, but what if it is tracked up? I think there is where most of the problems are and would like to transfer only the folders with the files to be mind unloaded. NOW, the doubt is: will my itunes and Address book be correctly transfered ( I have over 300 hundred people in my AB and wouldn't like to lose one song). Should I do it before or after the software updates?uTo speed it up I downloaded from the Apple site the Combo Security update called:

<MacOSXUpdCombo10.5.8.dmg>. Am I reasoning correctly?

Follow these instructions step by step to prepare a Mac for sale:

Step One - Back up your data:

A. If you have any Virtual PCs shut them down. They cannot be in their "fast saved" state. They must be shut down from inside Windows.

B. Clone to an external drive using using Carbon Copy Cloner.

1. Open Carbon Copy Cloner.

2. Select the Source volume from the Select a source drop down menu on the left side.

3. Select the Destination volume from the Select a destination drop down menu on the right

side.

4. Click on the Clone button. If you are prompted about creating a clone of the Recovery HD be

sure to opt for that.

Destination means a freshly erased external backup drive. Source means the internal

startup drive.

Step Two - Prepare the machine for the new buyer:

1. De-authorize the computer in iTunes! De-authorize both iTunes and Audible accounts.

2, Remove any Open Firmware passwords or Firmware passwords.

3. Turn the brightness full up and volume nearly so.

4. Turn off File Vault, if enabled.

5. Disable iCloud, if enabled: See What to do with iCloud before selling your computer.

Step Three - Install a fresh OS:

A. Snow Leopard and earlier versions of OS X

1. Insert the original OS X install CD/DVD that came with your computer.

2. Restart the computer while holding down the C key to boot from the CD/DVD.

3. Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu; repartition and reformat the internal hard drive.

Optionally, click on the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.

4. Install OS X.

5. Upon completion DO NOT restart the computer.

6. Shutdown the computer.

B. Lion and Mountain Lion (if pre-installed on the computer at purchase*)

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because

it is three times faster than wireless.

1. Restart the computer while holding down the COMMAND and R keys until the Mac OS X

Utilities window appears.

2. Select Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Utilities window and click on the Continue button.

3. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click

on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on the Security button

and set the Zero Data option to one-pass.

5. Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.

6. Quit DU and return to the Mac OS X Utilities window.

7. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.

8. Upon completion shutdown the computer.

*If your computer came with Lion or Mountain Lion pre-installed then you are entitled to transfer your license once. If you purchased Lion or Mountain Lion from the App Store then you cannot transfer your license to another party. In the case of the latter you should install the original version of OS X that came with your computer. You need to repartition the hard drive as well as reformat it; this will assure that the Recovery HD partition is removed. See Step Three above. You may verify these requirements by reviewing your OS X Software License.

The appropriate procedure in your case will revert the computer to its state new from the factory provided you have the original discs that came with the computer.

Hi MadMac

See, pls, that out discussion is not in the good order. i'm answering your email of OCT 15 and Nov 09. Where you implied I would keep having permission problems for not hving used migration neither TM to fully backup the system after the re-installation from the CD.

Yes, I realize this and I have not changed my mind yet, given the four items you previously mentioned.

Well, actually the only problm I kept having three days later was with iTunes that would't launch. You said the solution was a full system migration.

I said that was the solution to all your permissions problem, not iTunes specifically. You appear to have solved that by copying the application, but my advice would have been to re-install it.

- I found 4 files with permission to unknown (in Music folder) and this ipod framework. (I had already mentioned before, with my suspicious. I found it as a source option for restoring the system from iPhone) => I DON'T have an iPod; I dn't have iPhone!! I don't have any docs out in an internet store box whatsoever and it keeps me asking for updating.

I am having trouble visualizing exactly what it is asking you to update. Maybe a screen-shot or exact wording of the dialog box.

- What's iTunesX ?

- Why would I have to install all that? My syst is OS-X 5.8. And I never bought anything from internet. All my 25 gig iTunes is from my CD's.

iTunesX is the name that Apple gives to it's update for OS X to differentiate it from iTunes IOS or iTunes Windows. It's what you have installed and runs when you launch iTunes. It's what you downloaded and installed using Software Update the last time you updated it. You should be running v1.6.3 which can be downloaded from: iTunes 1.6.3.

- As for the locatin qstion, besides the Mac os, it is in Resources, as I said:

I'm not sure what the graphic is that you are trying to post, but it's not showing up. Did you upload the image? They don't accept linked or embedded any more.

Also, I forgot to tell you that in those forders I found sth related to Windows 2003.

Are you referring to the Music folders? What is "sth" again?

2) would like to ask you sth's I couldn't find : What's wikiserver?

and 3) Should this Remote Desktop be there?

User uploaded file

Wiki Server is only on the server version of 10.5, not the consumer version, but I see I have an almost empty folder at "/Library/Application Support/Apple/WikiServer/". The only thing in it are some German, French and Japanese translations that take up 128 KB. Do you have anything else?

Again, I can't see the graphic, but if you are referring to that same Apple folder, then yes it should be there. Every OS X comes with a "VNC" server that allows remote access if and only if you have "Screen Sharing" or "Remote Management" checked in System Preferences->Sharing.

AH! Ok. I pasted an image grabed with preview. how else could I show you?

Anyway, I decided to download iTunes 10.6.3 from the Apple site as you said ;just to be on the safe side. But it took over 6 hours !!! [when I downloaded (from the same broadband, same day) to my EeePC (iTunes for Windows7) it took abt 6 minutes!! Why 100X's slower into my Mac? And strangely enough, when I launched iTunes after downloading it, all my music was already there. it did not happen when I glissed iTunes.app from the old TM (ext.HD) - I had to send my musid handly and what I got automatically was exactely that last version; also I still can't deauthorize the Audible Account I never opened. Everything seemed ok in my Mac; now, it's slow again. Surfing is slow, changing pages is slow. When I reset Safari, it happens the same as in my old system: all cookies come back a minute later. It seems I'm not the only administrator as it is supposed to be! I'm getting bananas with all this strange behavior! I've been using all my free time to understand it and it seems I'm not learning enough. I hope Apple opens a store and offers a course in Rio asap. otherwise I'll have to go back to PC. There are lots of technicians to help me on PC.

I got to know yesterday that we can get evrth in the mac through iTunes. So, couldn't it be there where my old problm resides and I didn't know and was looking elsewhere? Is it the reason why the problems comes back after some days of the re-installation. I wonder if I made a mistake connecting to my old TM-HD, but I did not launch Time Machine; I just attached it and went straight to the folders I wanted, then, turned it off.

I wat to upgrade the system and to start using icloud and access my docs via EeePc or iPad but I can't do it before I'm abolutely sure my computer isn't being tracked anylonger.

By the way, sth= something. And Than you very much for all your help. iTunes is launching fast and working better but I don't have an Audible user name, neither a password to disable it. I don't know what to do.

They changed the rules here about a week ago and you can no longer paste or link images. When you open a reply box there is a statement in red letters to inform you about the change.

Please add the image directly by clicking Insert Image (camera icon). We cannot accept linked or embedded images.

Next time you want to post a screen grab, click on the camer icon in the reply window tool bar and follow the instructions for uploading the file. You will find the grab on your desktop labeled "Picture n" where n is a sequencial number.

...it took over 6 hours !!! [when I downloaded (from the same broadband, same day) to my EeePC (iTunes for Windows7) it took abt 6 minutes!! Why 100X's slower into my Mac?

I have no idea. Something to bring up in a new thread when we're done here, I guess.

I still can't deauthorize the Audible Account I never opened.

And I'm not clear on what you mean by an "Audible" account. As far as I know there is only an iTunes account which is good for music, movies, tv shows, books, podcasts and the new iTunesU (education). If you had an iPhone/iPad/iTouch you could also use it for apps on those devices. You can use your AppleID with it if you have one, or you can establish a separate account. There may or may not be a credit card attached to it. It is also where you can use iTunes gift cards or the free download cards available from Starbucks, etc. I know you have said that all your music comes from your CD collection, so I can only guess that somebody else opened the account. In any case, unless your Credit Card number was entered, I can't think of any risk to you by it being there.

...It seems I'm not the only administrator as it is supposed to be!

You erased the hard drive and installed a new system. There is no way there could be another user, let alone another admin.

I got to know yesterday that we can get evrth in the mac through iTunes.

That's not true at all for a Mac. There is an equivalent system known as the AppStore where you can download most, but not all apps, but you must have OS X 10.6.6 or above (I think) in order to use it. For System updates you need OS X 10.7 or 10.8. There are no Mac apps or system updates available from the iTunes store.

I must stop and get back to work for now.
