how do I replace video with a black screen but keep the audio?

I need to use a black screen and fade up to the video while keeping the sound. I have imported a project that I have already edited, so if I just cut it, I'll lose the audio. I can't find an option in transitions or the clip inspector that allows me to do this.

Here are two things to try.

1) Use the Fade Through Black Transition. Drag it to the start of your project and make it as long as you need.

2) Another way. Go to the Maps and scroll down. You should see a black background. You can drag this to the start of your movie (but it will be silent). To keep the audio, drag it and drop it on top of the beginning of your first clip. When a popup menu appears, choose Cutaway.

Note: You must have the Advanced Tools turned on in iMovie/Preferences for this to work.
