AppleTV Not showing in iTunes Devices

HI, I have a new Apple TV. The software is updated. I have an iMac OS 10.6.8, ITunes is 10.7. My Apple TV does not show in devices. However, everything else is working. I can play content from my iMac I just need to put content on the AppleTV so I can use it at a trade show. I have tried the trouble shooting guides, and I cannot figure it out. The instructions said to change ITunes preference to allow Apple TV, but I do not have that option...I think that is where the wheels started falling off the cart!!

🙂

I understand that, and I did tether via micro USB. The directions from that link are:

  1. Disconnect the power and HDMI cables from Apple TV. Note: If you do not disconnect the power cable before connecting the micro USB cable, you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list.
  2. Connect one end of a micro USB cable to the back of your Apple TV, and the other end to one of your computer's USB ports.
  3. Apple TV (3rd generation) only: Reconnect the power cable to your Apple TV.
  4. Open iTunes on your computer.
  5. Select your Apple TV in the Source list, and then click Restore.

I followed all these steps. When I open iTunes, my Apple TV doesn't show up under Devices, nor in a "Source list". The only place it does show up is in the bottom right-hand corner via Airplay with no options to restore or anything else, as I said above. What I'm asking is, how do I restore to the earlier version I have saved on my iMac when there is no place in iTunes to do that? Is there an option on Apple TV screen (when it's hooked up to my tv) to turn off Airplay?...and if so, and I turned it off, would it then show up in iTunes to restore?

I was having the same problem. I've been trying to restore b/c when I updated to 5.2 that bricked my Apple TV for some reason. I followed the steps to restore, but it kept not showing up as a device in iTunes. Here's how I finally got it to work:

  1. Plug in the micro USB cable to your Mac
  2. Plug in the power to the Apple TV
  3. This is when it should show up in iTunes according to Apple's instructions. But it doesn't
  4. Unplug the power and then plug it back in right away
  5. Then it showed up for me

Hope that helps

I'm wondering about this, too. I'm trying to restore my Apple TV3 to an earlier version, since it no longer shows any content other than Home & Settings after the last update. I was told to restore to earlier version (which I've downloaded to my imac) because the update is faulty and causing all sorts of problems.

My question is since Apple TV3 doesn't show up under Devices in itunes 10, but rather shows up in the right-hand bottom corner as Airplay, how can I restore it to the earlier version I downloaded? I don't see any options to do this restore, and am completely confused. Any help would be SOOO appreciated. 😕

Downgrading is discussed in length in this forum...in fact it's all over this forum, including the download link for the 5.0.2 file. At least they were trying to help a TON of people having the same problem as I.

But you're telling me I now have a $100 APPLE TV3 box that's been rendered useless by a bad APPLE "update", and I can't get any answers or help because it can't be discussed in the APPLE Support Forum. Wow. Thank you for your time.

Nope. No fix. Not even a hint of someone working on it. I have ATV 1st gen. Now useless, last week my iMac/Itunes was able to find the ATV and for 24 hours and was able to reload 50% but am unable to find again.

Everyday hoping for new update for Itunes that will fix.

Can't roll back update so am out of luck for the next while. Wonder how long a car company would stay in biz if their cars stopped working for undetermined amount of time with no feedback from manufacturer. Resurect Jobs' attention to detail and fix the problems promptly.

I've had my Apple TV a couple years now and love it when it works.

If the Apple TV does NOT have any storage then why do I constantly get a message from Apple TV saying that its 'full, and you have to delete some content before you can download another movie'.

If it can't store anything, why would Apple TV say its 'full'. ?

The alternative to deleting movies is to 'connect to your Mac'.

I have a new Macbook Pro Retina. Itunes is on - Apple TV is flashing a password for me to enter after clicking 'File>Devices' BUT Apple TV doesn't show up as a device.

I am running Itunes 11.0.1 on both the Macbook & the Apple TV.

None of my movies appear on my Macbook.

I don't want to do a factory restore as I will lose all the movies I have on the Apple TV.

Help.
